Storm causes power outages in Morgan City

Staff Report

Three Morgan City circuit feeders were tripped Thursday night during the thunderstorm causing areas of the city to lose electricity. The feeder locations were on Second Street, the uptown area and Youngs Road.

Multiple lightning strikes were reported at 9:47 p.m. by the Morgan’s City Utility answering service before losing power itself at the time of the storm, Utilities Director Bill Cefalu said.

Several wires were down due to lightning strikes. Trees caused the Second Street feeder to lose power. The Youngs Road feeder was affected by one of the broken power lines .

Power was restored at 10:30 p.m. for residents covered by the Second Street feeder. This area covers everything from Onstead Street to Brashear Avenue, in addition to Federal Avenue over to Front Street.

The uptown area’s electricity was restored at 11:30 p.m. This feeder services residents living on Brashear Avenue all the way to Myrtle Street. Also included are areas between Railroad Avenue and La. 182, which runs from the Atchafalaya River up to Myrtle Street.

Affected areas of the Youngs Road feeder included Railroad Avenue across the railroad tracks down Myrtle Street to the Intracoastal Waterway.

Cefalu found out about Youngs Road feeder outages while turning on breakers at the steam plant. Power was restored for that feeder at 1:30 a.m. today.
