Dist. 1 summer project set

A three week “Youth Empowerment Training and Capacity Building Project” is a St. Mary Parish Dist. 1 summer program to empower youths ages 15-18.
Programs will be presented academically, professionally, personally, socially and politically. The program will focus on resume building, interview skills, budgeting, goal setting, college preparation, professional and workforce development, character building and more.
Participants will learn from accomplished professionals and passionate leaders how to improve their competitive edge in today’s global workforce.
The program is free. Register by calling the West St. Mary Civic Center at 337-276-4896 by close of business on June 8. Only 25 slots are available for youths ages 15-18 of the St. Mary Parish Dist. 1 area only. This session begins at 8 a.m. June 13 through July 1.
Participants will learn to:
—Understand the procedures associated with college admissions
—Navigate the registration process for the required standardized college admission tests (ACT and SAT)
—Identify appropriate financial resources to help pay for college (scholarship, FAFSA, and other grants)
—Selecting the appropriate college major/curriculum for desired career path
—Preparation for technical training/trade school program
—Transitioning from school into the workforce
—Identify personal strengths and accomplishments for the construction of an effective résumé
—Practice interview etiquette for employment, school, and internship opportunities
—Understand local, state, and federal elections and voting procedures
—Differentiate between the branches of government and understand each particular role
—Network with community organizations for volunteer and community service opportunities
—Manage and budget small quantities of money
—Create personal and professional goals that are SMART (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, and Timely)
