Sheriff: Inmate dies at St. Mary jail after reporting feeling sick

An inmate at the parish jail died Saturday after reporting feeling ill and later becoming unresponsive, according to a St. Mary Parish Sheriff's Office news release.
Sterling Scully, 52, an inmate at the St. Mary Parish Law Enforcement Center, reported he was ill and was brought to medical where he was seen by medical staff. Acadian Ambulance was summoned. Shortly after, Scully became unresponsive. Resuscitation efforts were implemented and were unsuccessful. Scully was pronounced dead by the St. Mary Parish Coroner’s office, the release said.
The investigation has been turned over to the Coroner’s Office. Scully had been incarcerated since December 2015 and was serving time on charges of illegal possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and for violation of felony probation.
