Two pedestrians and a bicyclist have died in recent crashes

Two pedestrians, including one teen, and a teen bicyclist have died in crashes in the area during the past four days, and another child was nearly hit by a vehicle Tuesday.
St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office detectives are still investigating a crash Saturday in Amelia that left a 13-year-old girl dead.
Allyson Duval, 13, of Morgan City, who was walking near Lake Palourde Road in Amelia, died after being hit by a pickup truck Saturday night.
Shortly before 9 p.m. Saturday, deputies of the St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office responded to a 911 call of a crash involving a pedestrian on Lake Palourde Road in Amelia.
Deputies investigating the crash determined that Duval was walking near the roadway when she was struck by a 1998 tan Chevrolet pick-up truck driven by Michael Nguyen, 32, of Amelia. Duval was severely injured in the crash and transported by Acadian Ambulance to Teche Regional Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead by the St. Mary Parish Coroner, the release said. The investigation is continuing.
In a separate incident Tuesday in Amelia, a child was nearly hit on Westside Park Lane while walking home from a bus stop with a parent, a sheriff’s office news release said. Marlen Hernandez, 29, of Amelia, was charged with aggravated assault and reckless operation of a vehicle and jailed without bail in connection with incident.
Hernandez’s vehicle hit a puddle of water, splashing the child, the release said. The deputy also received additional complaints about Hernandez’s driving. A sheriff’s deputy saw Hernandez speed down the lane and then brake rapidly when she saw the police unit.
Two other crashes in nearby Lafourche and Iberia parishes within the past few days also claimed the lives of a bicyclist and another pedestrian.
Just before 1 p.m. Tuesday, state police Troop C in Lafourche Parish began investigating a fatality crash involving a dump truck and a bicyclist on La. 182 just west of La. 1 in Raceland. The crash took the life of Autumn Fuller, 13, of Raceland, according to a Troop C news release.
The preliminary investigation revealed Fuller was traveling east on the west-bound shoulder of La. 182 on a Mongoose bicycle. Randy Reulet, 56, of Raceland, was traveling east on La. 182 in a 2004 GMC C8500. For unknown reasons, Fuller attempted to cross both lanes of La. 182 and struck the rear of Reulet’s vehicle. She sustained fatal injuries as a result of the impact and was pronounced dead on scene by the Lafourche Parish Coroner’s Office, state police said. Reulet was wearing his seat belt and was not injured, police said.
Alcohol and drug involvement was not suspected as a factor in the crash, but standard toxicology reports are pending on Fuller. Reulet submitted to a breath test which resulted in no alcohol present, police said.
Shortly before 8:30 p.m. Saturday, state police Troop I in Iberia Parish were dis-patched to a fatal pedestrian crash on U.S. 90 near La. 329. The crash claimed the life of Jason Newburn, 34, of Hattiesburg, Mississippi, a state police Troop I news release said.
The initial investigation led troopers to determine that a 2006 Volvo SUV driven by Ab Coulan, 28, of New Orleans, was traveling eastbound on U.S. 90. Newburn was walking south, across U.S. 90 in the eastbound lane when he was struck by the SUV.
Newburn sustained fatal injuries in the crash and was pronounced dead on-scene by the Iberia Parish Coroner’s Office. Coulan was properly restrained and was not injured. Blood samples were obtained from Newburn and will be sent to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis. Coulan submitted to a chemical breath test and was not impaired.
The investigation is ongoing, state police said.
