Berwick woman arrested on string of drug charges

A 24-year-old Berwick woman was booked on numerous drug charges after St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office deputy observed a vehicle swerving on U.S. 90 in Berwick, Sheriff Mark Hebert said in a news release.
—Brooke McManus, 24, of River Road in Berwick, was arrested at 2:17 a.m. Tuesday on the charges of possession of Schedule II drugs with intent to distribute, possession of Schedule II drugs, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of open alcoholic beverages in motor vehicles, a warrant for failure to appear on the charges of possession of methamphetamine with intent to distribute, possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, possession of alprazolam with intent to distribute, and improper lane usage and a warrant for failure to appear on the charges of possession of methamphetamine, possession of Halcion, possession of a legend drug without a prescription, and possession of Schedule I drugs.
A deputy observed a vehicle drive into the path of his police unit on U.S. 90 in Berwick. The vehicle pulled out in close proximity to the oncoming police unit, Hebert said.
The deputy then observed the vehicle swerving from lane to lane and onto the shoulder of the roadway. The deputy conducted a traffic stop and made contact with the driver and several passengers in the car.
While speaking with the driver, the deputy smelled the strong odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from the vehicle. The deputy received consent to search the car and located an open bottle of liquor inside a purse belonging to a passenger identified as McManus.
The deputy also located a small bag of methamphetamine inside McManus’ purse. The deputy then found another open container of alcohol in the passenger door and a digital scale in the glove compartment where McManus was seated. The deputy also located active warrants for McManus’ arrest.
The deputy detained McManus in a police unit pending the completion of the investigation. While escorting McManus from the police unit, the deputy observed pieces of crystal methamphetamine on the seat and in her lap.
After being questioned about the illegal substance, McManus turned over a bag containing a larger amount of methamphetamine that she was hiding. McManus was jailed with no bail set.
Hebert reported responding to 42 complaints in the parish and reported the following arrests in east St. Mary Parish:
—Cameron Jackson, 17, of Sun Road in Bayou Vista, was arrested at 1:10 p.m. Monday on the charge of possession of drug paraphernalia.
A deputy responded to a report of a disturbance on Sun Road. The deputy located Jackson during the investigation and received consent to search his bedroom. During the search, the deputy located a grinder containing small pieces of marijuana. Jackson was released on a summons to appear in court Jan. 4.
—Roxann Yarbrough, 55, of Arlington Street in Bayou Vista, was arrested at 7:15 p.m. Monday on the charge of hit and run driving.
A deputy responded to Robison Drive in Berwick in reference to a hit and run crash that occurred on U.S. 90. The deputy spoke with all parties involved, including Yarbrough, who was located at her home. The deputy found that Yarbrough struck another vehicle on the bridge and then left the scene of the crash. Following the investigation, Yarbrough was released on a summons to appear in court Jan. 4.
Morgan City Police Chief James Blair reported the following arrest:
—Javier Santos, 44, of Fourth Street in Morgan City, was arrested at 7:05 a.m. Monday on the charges of disturbing the peace by intoxication, criminal trespassing and on a warrant for failure to appear on the charge of theft by shoplifting.
Officers responded to a residence on Willard Street in regard to a person trespassing on the property. Police arrived and spoke with construction workers who told officers that they were in the process of renovating the home. On Monday morning, workers arrived and located a person sleeping inside the home who was not supposed to be there.
Police then made contact with the subject in question, identified as Santos, who was still inside the home. Santos was suspected to have been drinking and appeared to be intoxicated. Santos had an active warrant for the 6th Ward Morgan City Court. Santos was jailed.
Patterson Police Chief Patrick LaSalle reported the following arrest:
—Demetrius Green, 27, of Mill Road in Patterson, was arrested at 3:31 p.m. Monday on the charges of resisting an officer by failure to comply and resisting an officer by force. Bail is set at $578.
Berwick Police Chief James Richard reported no arrests.
