Bayou Vista Garden Club presents ‘Spice Up Life’

“Spice Up Life” was the theme of the Bayou Vista Garden Club January meeting. Members made and shared food dishes using the spices they selected at the November meeting.

Each member presented horticultural information, medicinal properties, and historical and cultural data on their spice. The variety of dishes prepared using the selected spices included dips, appetizers, salads, breads, cakes, candy, tea and meat entrees.

Environmental Awareness Chairman Kim Alcina displayed her upcycled bird feeders using repurposed lamp stands and bowls.

Annita Blanco, wildlife conservation chairman, read the book, “Petit Pierre and the Floating Marsh,” written by Johnette Downing and illustrated by Heather Stanley. Blanco donated the book to the club for its youth conservation and environmental programs.

Jennie Aucoin and Jean Chauvin served as hostesses for the meeting. Chauvin created an Ikebana floral design using yellow roses, flax ( Linum usitatissimum), and leopard plant leaves ( Farfugium japonicum ).

The door prize winner was Gloria Roy.

The next club meeting will be at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 13 at the Bayou Vista Community Center. New members are welcome.
