MYRTLE ‘MYRT’ MATTHEWS-COLBERT
Myrtle “Myrt” Matthews-Colbert, 89, a resident of Franklin and a native of Ashton, died Wednesday, October 1, 2014 at the Franklin Health Care and Rehabilitation Center in Franklin, at 7:55 p.m.
Visitation will be from 8 a.m. until 10 a.m. on Saturday, October 4, 2014 at the St. Peter the Apostle Church (Four Corners), 1325 Big Four Corners Rd., Franklin, with a rosary being recited at 10 a.m. A mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Dismas Mauk, SVD serving as the Celebrant. Burial will follow in the Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery in Baldwin.
Myrtle is survived by her two children, Alvin Colbert Sr. (Elaine) of Youngsville and Mary Colbert of Missouri City, Texas; one sister, Vervidell Matthews of Franklin; three grandchildren, Toya, Alvin Jr. (Alanda) and Andre’; six great grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Leona Keys of Oakland, California; three brothers-in-law, Coleman “Craig” Colbert of Ashton, Lacy Colbert of Berkeley, California and Harold Drexler Sr. of New Iberia; and a host of nieces and nephews.
Also “Myrt” is survived by one godchild, Vivian Melvin of Houston, Texas; and close friends, Dorothy Butler of Franklin and Margaret “Sutter” Arceneaux of Ashton.
Myrtle was preceded in death by her parents, Joe and Earnestine Matthews; her husband, Louis “Squirrel” Colbert Jr.; one sister, Earline Drexler; and four brothers, Cleveland, Lawless, Ulysses and Horace Matthews.
