Funeral services honoring the life of Russell Mathews Sr. will be held on Saturday, May 2, 2015, 10 a.m., at MK Dixon Funeral Home in Baldwin. Visitation will be Saturday, May 2, at 7 a.m. until the time of service. He will be buried in the Sorrel Community Cemetery. Pastor Valerie Rhine, officiating; and the Rev. Craig A. Mathews, eulogist.
A native of Four Corners and resident of New Iberia, Russell passed away on April 28, 2015, at his residence. He was 61 years old.
Left to cherish fond memories are his children, Russell (Mary) Matthews Jr., Cora (Jonathan) Polidore, of New Iberia, Norma Matthews, Timothy (Shareka) Matthews and Luke (Josephine) Matthews, of Houston, TX; step-children, Leola (Ron) Berria, Rex (Gladys) Phillips, Angenelle (Derrick Sr.) Phillips-Davis, Darnell Phillips and Faith Phillips; brothers Freddie (Marilyn) Matthews of New Iberia, Wilfred Matthews of Los Angeles, CA, Ronald Matthews of Houma, Charles (Sherita) Matthews of Lafayette; sisters Shirley Matthews of Corona, CA, Norma (Leopold) Hams of El Sereno, CA, Seniora (Robert) Matthews of Houston, TX, Annie Marie Matthews of Kileen, TX, Celestine Matthews and Nina (Charles) Thigpen of Austin, TX; 26 grandchildren; 2 great grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Omega Matthews; stepson, Ryan Phillips; grandson, Derrick L Davis Jr.; parents, Murphy Matthews Sr. and Beatrice Boutte Matthews and four brothers, Murphy Matthews Jr., Donnie Matthews, Wilburt Matthews, Oscar Doyle Matthews.
Active Pallbearers will be Russell Matthews Jr., Timothy Matthews, Luke Matthews, Derek Reedom, Darnell Phillips and Jonathon Cole.
Honorary pallbearers will be Freddie Matthews Sr., Wilfred Matthews, Ronald Matthews, Charles Matthews and Rex Phillips.
