Funeral services for Walter J. Chauvin Jr. will be held Monday, Jan. 23, 2017, during an 11 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Centerville. He will be laid to rest in Teche Gardens Cemetery in Verdunville. Father Ruben Primor will be the Celebrant for the Mass with Father Oneil Landry concelebrating. Serving as pallbearers will be Ryan Polito, Brodie Young, Raymond Young Jr., Bart Polito, Merlin Giroir, Roy Poe, Glenn Fletcher, and Kerry Aucoin.
A gathering of family and friends was held at Ibert’s Mortuary on Sunday from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., with the Holy Rosary being prayed at 6 p.m. Visitations resumed Monday morning at 9 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church.
Walter was born on Bayou Chene on May 1, 1931 to the late Walter J. Chauvin Sr. and the late Eufamie Kelly Chauvin and has been a longtime resident of Verdunville. He passed away at his home at the age of 85 on Thursday, Jan. 19, 2017. At the age of 19 he enlisted in the United States Air Force and served his country and fellow man during the Korean Conflict. He was an accomplished aluminum and wooden boat builder who took pride in showing his boats at local festivals, especially the Bayou Teche Black Bear Festival and the Bayou Teche Wooden Boat Show. Some of his favorite pastimes were enjoying the outdoors and having family over for cook-ups. He was truly a loving husband and devoted father whose family meant the world to him. He will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Survivors include three children, Walter J. “Sonny” Chauvin III and his wife Darlene, Ava Chauvin Young and her husband Raymond Jr., and Heidi Chauvin Polito and her husband Bart; six grandchildren, Cassie Chauvin, Kayla Young, Brittney Polito Broussard and her husband Jacob, Megan Chauvin, Ryan Polito, and Brodie Young; one great grandson, Luca Paul Broussard; four sisters, Deanna Benedietto, Theresa Giroir, Judy Werline, and Amy Chauvin; his beloved dog, Buster; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Thelma Burns Chauvin; his parents, Walter J. Chauvin Sr. and Eufamie Kelly Chauvin; and four brothers, Charles “Blackie”, Larry, Jimmy, and Johnny Chauvin.
