Norwood sets mark at invite

A Morgan City High alum and current LSU track and field standout set both a meet and field house record in the 600-yard run at the University of Kentucky’s Rod McCravy Memorial Indoor Track & Field meet Friday.
Vernon Norwood set the marks with a time of 1:08.84 to win the race.
He shattered the previous meet and field house record of 1:11.69.
Second-place finisher Byron Robinson of Texas also eclipsed the old marks with a time of 1:10.93.
Norwood’s mark was 0.04 off his personal record of 1:08.80 that he set as a school record at South Plains College in Levelland, Texas, in 2013.
Meanwhile, on Saturday, Norwood and his teammates combined for a second-place finish in the 4x400-meter relay. The Tigers recorded a time of 3:04.28 to finish second behind the Florida Gators, who clocked in at 3:04.22.
Both times smashed the meet and field house records set by the University of Florida in 20014 and 2009, respectively.
The previous meet record was 3:07.20, while the previous field house mark was 3:05.82.
LSU, the defending NCAA Indoor Champions in the event, recorded the second-quickest time in the country at Saturday’s meet and improved upon its previous season best of 3:07.65.
Norwood ran the anchor leg on the relay, which also featured Darrell Bush, Quincy Downing and Cyril Grayson.
LSU will return to action Friday and Saturday when it begins action in the Razorback Invitational at Fayetteville, Arkansas.
Meanwhile last weekend, the University of Alabama-Birmingham’s Vulcan Invite at the Birmingham Crossplex Arena, Patterson alum Jonathan Jeffcoat finished in 17th place in the 3,000 meter run with a time of 9:21.33.
ULM will return to action Feb. 13-14 when it participates in the Samford Invitational in Birmingham, Ala.
Southeastern Louisiana University also participated in the Vulcan Invite and Central Catholic alum Kendall Robinson finished fourth in the high jump with a leap of 1.95 meters, or about 6.4 feet.
Southeastern will return to action Friday and Saturday when it participates in Cameron Communications McNeese Indoor II in Lake Charles.
