Randi Brown named SLC's top freshman

Staff Report

Randi Brown was voted the Southland Conference Freshman of the Year in an announcement by the conference office Tuesday.
Brown, a Central Catholic High School alum, becomes the first women’s basketball player in Privateer history to earn the honor.
She ended the season on a scoring splurge, upping her points per game average from 7.6 at the end of January to 12.7 by the end of the season while helping New Orleans close the year with a four-game winning streak.
Prior to the season’s final stretch, the last Privateers’ four-game winning streak came in January 2002.
“It’s an amazing honor for that young lady who worked so hard in the classroom and on the court. Her hard work has paid off,” New Orleans Coach Keeshawn Davenport said in a press release. “All that extra work she put in showed on the court, and she couldn’t be more deserving of this award.”
For her efforts, Brown also was named Southland Conference Player of the Week in back-to-back weeks, the last honor coming this week.
Some of her highlights included dropping 30 points in each of the two meetings against Southeastern.
Brown also heated up from three-point range, draining 21 triples in the last six games to end the season with 46 three-pointers made.
“I tell my team all the time, you don’t get rewarded for what you’re supposed to do. You get rewarded for the extra that you do,” Davenport said. “Randi exemplifies the type of young lady I want in this program, and it’s an individual honor, but a great team honor as well. She’s a very humble kid, and it’s all about team with her.”
Brown also was a big help in creating extra possessions for the Privateers. She had a career-best seven steals in a win against Abilene Christian and followed up with four steals in the home finale against Southeastern.
This season, Brown led the team in points, three-pointers made, free throws made and free-throw percentage.
