Berwick to face CCA and Patterson, MCHS to meet in Morgan City High School Jamboree

Special teams are the biggest concern for Tri-City area coaches in the Morgan City High School Football Jamboree Friday at Tiger Stadium.
Berwick will host Covenant Christian in the opening game at 6 p.m., while Morgan City will face Patterson in the nightcap at 8 p.m.
As for Berwick, the Panthers had a heavy seven-on-seven schedule this summer and scrimmaged against Catholic High New Iberia last week. Berwick had a tough time in the scrimmage against Catholic High, the defending Division IV state runner-up.
The Panthers were limited to a second-team touchdown while Catholic High scored three first-team touchdowns. Berwick’s score came on a 60-yard pass from Mitchell Sanford to Beau Boudreaux. Also, Berwick standout Audwin Williams had two catches for 80 yards.
Berwick took on Catholic High-N.I. because the team runs the Wing-T offense.
BHS Coach Craig Brodie called his former team the best Wing-T team in the state. Covenant Christian also runs a Wing-T offense.
“It’s a good dress rehearsal for the players and the coaches,” Brodie said of the jamboree. “It’s a chance to work out the bugs and see kids play at game speed. And the coaches get their first real look at special teams; you’re never quite sure where your special teams are until you see them live.”
Covenant Christian comes into the jamboree after scrimmaging Central Catholic last week. Covenant Christian used two pick-six interception returns in the 12-minute live quarter to come away feeling good. Cameron Solet had a 50-yard interception return, while Marquel Daigle returned one 45 yards, according to The Houma Courier.
Evan Dugas made both extra points for the Lions, the Courier reported.
In the scripted action, neither team’s first-offenses scored, but Central Catholic’s second team had two scores.
In the nightcap, Patterson and Morgan City renew their local rivalry.
Morgan City pummeled Jeanerette in scrimmage action last week. Morgan City got touchdowns from Malik Phillips and Clifton Escort in first-team action and Kalen Hillen scored two second-team touchdowns.
The Tigers also got a second-team touchdown when Isiah Escort connected with sophomore Logan Tingle.
“I want to see the offense execute the game plan and not turn the ball over,” Morgan City head coach Scott Tregle said. “But I really want to get a good look at our special teams. And defensively, I want to see the kids flying to the football, but I want them to get lined up correctly. We struggled with that in the scrimmage.”
The Tigers will rotate two quarterbacks and six running backs on offense.
“Hopefully, we can get all of them in the game,” Tregle said. “We are trying to develop some depth so we can keep the kids playing both ways fresh.”
Patterson comes in after an uneven performance against St. James in a scrimmage last week. Patterson scored two touchdowns and gave up three against highly-regarded St. James.
The Lumberjacks scored on its first two series, both scores by standout Nehemiah Augustus. Augustus scored on a 20-yard touchdown from quarterback Sirbatian Charles, and he scored on an option pitch from Charles for 50 yards.
“I want to see us improve on some things from the scrimmage,” Patterson Coach Chad Blanchard said. “I want to see us finish drives better and get off the field on defense. I also want to see what kind of progress we’ve made on special teams, but most of all, I want to see the kids come out, play hard and have fun.”
