Berwick High School coach Heather Templet said she set her squad’s schedule up to prepare them for the postseason.
Come Thursday at 5:30 p.m., she will begin to see the result of the plan when Berwick, the No. 15 seed in Division III, will host No. 18 seed Lusher Charter in the first round.
“Our district is one of the toughest districts that we have in the state, and it really prepares us for the journey that we’re on right now,” Templet said. “Our nondistrict schedule is set up the same way. Played a lot of top teams, Assumption, Newman … and that’s all, hopefully, going to have us ready for Thursday.”
As for the regular season, Templet said she thought her squad had a solid season.
“This year returning an experienced team, we’re about where I thought we would be, ready for the playoffs, working hard right now, just getting ready for that game on Thursday,” she said. “We’re excited to be in the playoffs, and we can’t wait.”
As for Lusher Charter, Templet said she didn’t know a lot about them but she said she does know they have a good middle hitter and a good setter.
“It’s going to be up to our defense to set the tone,” Templet said. “Our defense can set the tone, and then offensively, we should be able to handle the ball.”
Lusher Charter, the District 9-III runner-up, also has faced tough competition this season. The squad competes in District 9-III and took Ursuline Academy to four sets in one district matchup, while earlier in the season, they fell to Academy of Sacred Heart of New Orleans in four games. Ursuline Academy, which won District 9-III, is seeded No. 4 in Division III, while Academy of Sacred Heart of New Orleans is seeded No. 4 in Division IV.
While Lusher Charter dropped its finale to Ben Franklin (Division II’s No. 2 seed) in straight sets, it had won its previous four games.
