Berwick's Kenan Jones earns 3A All-State first-team honors

Staff Report

Four Berwick High School Panthers earned Louisiana Sports Writers Association Class 3A All-State team honors, including one first-team selection.
Berwick junior wide receiver Kenan Jones was a first-team selection.
Fellow junior wide receiver Josh Carver, as well as sophomore quarterback Mitchell Sanford and senior defensive back D.J. Robicheaux, were honorable mention selections.
Berwick head football coach Eric Holden didn’t have individual statistics available, but he said Jones and Carver each had more than 1,000 yards receiving, while Sanford was approaching 1,500 yards passing.
Robicheaux was among the top three tacklers for the Panthers, who made the playoffs this season for the first time since the 1996 season. Berwick finished the 2016 season with an 8-3 mark.
“Every one of those guys brought leadership and great character to their position and to their side of the ball,” Holden said. “At different points and times throughout the season, every one of those guys were called on to make a play for us to be successful in a game, and when they were called on, they delivered."
Holden said the quartet had a “hunger and desire for perfection.”
“One of the things that was great about all of them is they understood the call to create something great at Berwick High," he said.
Senior running back Elijah Mitchell of Erath is Class 3A’s Outstanding Offensive Player, while Josh Paul of De La Salle is the 3A Outstanding Defensive Player. Zephaniah Powell of Class 3A runner-up Amite is the Coach of the Year.
In addition to Mitchell of Erath, a District 8-3A opponent of Berwick and Patterson, other District 8-3A representatives on the all-state team included senior offensive lineman Jerrick Romero of Kaplan (first team), senior linebacker Julius Johnson of Kaplan (first team) and Mac Thibeaux of Kaplan (honorable mention).
