BHS men finish 13th to lead area contingent at state meet
The Berwick High School men’s swim team finished 13th in team scoring to highlight area swim team action at the Allstate Sugar Bowl Louisiana High School Athletic Association Swimming State Meet Thursday.
Berwick finished the meet with 41 points.
Mikey Martin led the Panthers as he finished 11th in the 100-yard butterfly and 16th in the 200-yard individual medley. In the butterfly, he swam a mark of 1:07.19, shaving nearly a second off his state-qualifying time.
He had finished 10th in preliminaries in the event with a time of 1:07.47.
Meanwhile, in the 200-yard IM, Martin swam a 2:34.09 in the finals.
In preliminaries, he recorded a 14th place finish with a time of 2:31.71, about 2.5 seconds faster than his state-qualifying time.
In other individual action, Berwick freshman Joseph Borkowski finished 26th in preliminaries in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 2:24.26.
In Berwick boys’ relay action, the Panthers finished 11th in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:47.44, which was more than two seconds faster than their preliminary time of 1:49.71 and more than three seconds faster than their seeded time entering state.
The team consisted of senior Nicholas Mayon, sophomore Kyle Boudreaux, Borkowski and sophomore Grayson Wells.
In the boys’ 400-yard freestyle, Berwick finished 10th with a time of 4:14.41, more than a second faster than their preliminary time of 4:15.98. The team consisted of Martin, Borkowski, freshman Ty Kapp and Wells.
In girls’ action, Berwick finished 17th in team scoring with 24 points.
Junior Mary Jordan Melancon finished 21st in preliminaries in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:24.77, while she finished 26th in the preliminaries for the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 28.41.
Berwick’s Abbie Koen also competed in the girls’ 100-yard breaststroke. She finished 24th with a time of 1:25.80 in preliminary action.
In girls’ relay action, Berwick finished 13th in finals action in both the 200-yard freestyle relay and the 400-yard freestyle relay.
Berwick’s 200-yard freestyle relay, which consisted of junior Mary Morella, freshman Maya McGinnis, sophomore Mary Catherine Reggie and Melancon, recorded a time of 2:03.27 in finals action, taking more than a second off their preliminary time of 2:04.57 and more two seconds off their seeded time entering state.
In the 400-yard freestyle, Berwick finished 13th with a time of 4:55.20, knocking more than a second off its preliminary time of 4:56.53 and more than five seconds off its seeded time for state competition.
The team consisted of Morella, senior Morgan Chaisson, freshman Megan Soileau and senior Shanna Roussel.
In Division IV, the Central Catholic men’s swim team placed 20th in team scoring with six points.
Central Catholic freshman David Nugent advanced to finals competition in both the 50-yard freestyle and the 100-yard freestyle.
Nugent finished 15th in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 26.80 after finishing 16th in preliminaries with a time of 26.78.
In the 100-yard freestyle preliminary, Nugent finished ninth with a time of 59.55, nearly a second off his state-qualifying time.
In the finals, he recorded a 13th place finish with a time of 1:00.21.
Central Catholic senior William Hunter also competed in the 50-yard freestyle and finished 17th with a time of 27.67.
