CCHS and Berwick win on day 1

Central Catholic edged Thibodaux, 3-2, in opening round action of the second annual Tri-City Baseball Classic at Patterson Thursday.
In the win, Central Catholic’s Greg Leger tossed a two-hitter with 10 strikeouts. In five innings, he surrendered an earned run and walked four.
Blake Hidalgo pitched an inning of relief and fanned two, while Charlie Solar pitched the seventh and surrendered an unearned run on a hit and fanned two, including the game’s final batter with the tying run on second base.
Central Catholic, a Class 1A semifinalist a year ago, plated a run in the bottom of the first, and the score remained the same until the top of the fifth when Thibodaux countered with a run.
The Eagles responded with two more runs in the bottom of the sixth for a 3-1 advantage, before Thibodaux attempted a late rally with a run in the top of the seventh.
Offensively, the Eagles recorded seven hits but left seven runners on base.
Patrick Barron finished 2-for-2 with a double and an RBI to lead the squad. Other top contributors included Drake Angeron, 2-for-3; Thomas Garber, 1-for-3, a double and an RBI; Adam Dupuis, 1-for-2, a double, a run and two stolen bases; Mitchell Lemoine, 1-for-3, a double and a stolen base; and Samuel Guarisco, an RBI.
Central Catholic (1-0) will continue tournament play this weekend when it faces Berwick today at 5:40 p.m. at Patterson, while on Saturday, the squad will meet Bunkie in a 4:45 p.m. matchup in Amelia.

H.L. Bourgeois
Three Berwick pitchers combined to toss a one-hitter in Berwick’s 4-3 victory against H.L. Bourgeois in Tri-City Baseball Classic action at Tiger Diamond in Morgan City Thursday.
Cameron Wiley, Nick Mayon and D.J. Robicheaux all pitched for Berwick Thursday with Mayon earning the win.
In the win, however, the trio also walked a combined eight batters.
Mayon earned the win in relief of starter Cameron Wiley. In 3.1 innings, Mayon surrendered the game’s lone hit, walked two, hit one batter and fanned one.
Wiley started the game, and in 1.2 innings, he surrendered three earned runs and walked five.
Robicheaux pitched two innings and surrendered one walk and fanned three.
Each team scored three runs in the second inning, while Berwick plated the eventual game-winner in the bottom of the third.
Offensively, Austin Price led Berwick with a 1-for-2 performance with two RBIs. Other top contributors included Mayon, 1-for-3, an RBI; Brandon Fryou, 1-for-2, a double; and Bradley Gray and Tanner Caldwell, each 1-for-3 with a double.
Berwick (1-0) will return to action this weekend with two games in the Tri-City Baseball Classic. Today, the squad will face Central Catholic, a Class 1A semifinalist in 2015, in a 5:40 p.m. contest, while on Saturday, Berwick will meet Central Lafourche in a 10 a.m. game.
CCA tops MCHS
Covenant Christian defeated Morgan City, 4-2, in first-day action at the second annual Tri-City Baseball Classic at Tiger Diamond in Morgan City.
While Morgan City took a 1-0 lead after an inning, Covenant Christian took the lead for good with two runs in the top of the second and another in the top of the third for a 3-1 advantage.
Morgan City cut its deficit to 3-2 with a run in the bottom of the sixth, but Covenant Christian, a Class 1A semifinalist in 2015, added an insurance run in the top of the seventh.
Rhett Fryou suffered the loss for Morgan City. In seven innings, he surrendered four runs — three earned — on 10 hits with two walks and five strikeouts.
Offensively, Evan Stadalis led Morgan City with a 2-for-3 performance with two doubles and two RBIs, while Colby Glatter was 2-for-3 with a stolen base and a run.
Morgan City (0-1) will continue action in the Tri-City Baseball Classic with games today against E.D. White at 5:40 p.m. and on Saturday against Marksville in a 7 p.m. contest.
