CCHS' annual 7-on-7 tournament is Saturday
Nine teams will converge at Central Catholic’s practice fields Saturday for the Eagles’ annual 7-on-7 tournament.
In addition to host Central Catholic, other participants will include Patterson, Morgan City, Franklin, Jeanerette, West St. Mary, Highland Baptist, South Lafourche and Northside.
The Central Catholic practice field will be split into two 40-yard fields with games going on simultaneously, beginning at 8:30 a.m. and the last game starting at 3 p.m.
“It should be a great turnout,” Central Catholic Coach Tommy Minton said. “It’s really great that so many teams in the area are going to give up their Saturday to come out and work and get better. … It’s going to be good competition.”
In addition to the games, linemen work will be added to this year’s event within the “Linemen Challenge.”
Minton said linemen would be working on different types of blocks and pass protection and pass rush.
“They’re going to get better also, and that’s what this time of year is all about is working to get better,” Minton said.
The linemen part of the work will conclude with offensive linemen working against defensive linemen in one-on-one pass rush with the field being whittled to one remaining lineman, who will be named the competition’s champion.
Minton agreed that the linemen work would be valuable, especially for smaller schools like Central Catholic and Highland Baptist, working against linemen from bigger schools.
“My whole philosophy as long as I’ve coached it is the better competition, the better it makes you, and if you can work against good competition, it’s going to make you raise your level of performance,” Minton said.
As for the 7-on-7 games, possessions will begin at the 40-yard line and teams will have three downs to get a first down. First downs are every 15 yards.
Inside the 10-yard line, teams will have four downs to score.
Touchdowns will be worth six points.
After a touchdown, teams can go for an extra point from the 5-yard line or for two points from the 10-yard line.
Additionally, interceptions will be worth three points and defensive stops, two points.
