CCHS defeats Berwick, 40-32

Central Catholic topped Berwick, 40-32, Thursday in a matchup of area teams on the opening night of the Advance Physical Therapy Lumberjack Invitational at Patterson High School.
While Berwick took a 10-6 lead after the first quarter, Central Catholic responded with a 9-5 scoring advantage in the second period to tie the game at 15 at halftime.
The Eagles outscored Berwick 17-11 in the third period for a 32-26 lead, and Central Catholic held an 8-6 scoring edge in the final period.
Jalen Johnson and Demarcus Mitchell led the Eagles with 11 points apiece, while Elijah Swan scored nine.
For Berwick, Travis Whitehead was tops with 10 points, while Audwin Williams scored seven and Kenan Jones, six.
Berwick (8-5) will face Thibodaux at 3:30 p.m. today and Lafayette High Saturday at 10 a.m.
Central Catholic (2-2) will return to action today when it meets Morgan City at 6:30 p.m., while on Saturday, the Eagles play South Lafourche at 2:30 p.m.
Morgan City tops
St. Martinville in OT
The Morgan City Tigers rallied to get back in the game in the fourth quarter and then outscored St. Martinville 7-2 in overtime for a 54-49 victory at Patterson’s tournament Thursday.
Trailing 38-33 heading into the fourth period, Morgan City outscored St. Martinville 14-9 in the final quarter to force overtime.
While St. Martinville took a 15-10 lead after the first period, Morgan City responded in the second quarter with a 12-5 scoring advantage for a 22-20 halftime lead.
However, St. Martinville outscored Morgan City 18-11 in the third period.
Cedric Gant and Makye Richard each had 13 points to lead Morgan City, while Taaj Daniels had 10.
Other scorers included Tywan Walker, seven; Jared Singleton, six; and Lloyd Singleton, four. DeAndre Long added 10 blocks.
Morgan City had five three-pointers as a team.
The Tigers (8-5) will return to action today when it meets Central Catholic in a 6:30 p.m. contest, while on Saturday, the Tigers will face Patterson at 1 p.m.
Patterson tops
South Lafourche
The Patterson Lumberjacks knocked off South Lafourche, 57-51, at Patterson’s tournament Thursday.
Patterson led 12-11 after the first quarter, but South Lafourche took a 27-26 lead into halftime.
However, Patterson came back with a 14-9 scoring advantage in the third period for a 40-36 lead after three quarters and then outscored South Lafourche 17-15 in the fourth period for the final margin.
Taylan Grogan led Patterson with 18 points, while Kenneth Washington scored 14 and Nehemiah Augustus, 11.
Patterson (3-2) will return to action today at its tournament when it meets St. Martinville in the nightcap, set for an 8 o’clock tip. On Saturday, Patterson will play Morgan City at 1 p.m.

Central Catholic opened District 7-1A play Thursday with a 31-19 victory against Ascension Episcopal.
Sydney Williams led the squad with a double-double with 10 points and 13 rebounds.
Other contributors included Lydia Rivas, nine points and six rebounds; Hallie Autin, six points and two assists; Sanaa Mitchell, five points and six rebounds; and Aaliyah Poole, eight rebounds.
Central Catholic (7-3) will return to action Monday when it opens its annual Christmas Classic with a 4:30 p.m. contest against Vandebilt Catholic.
