CCHS edges Patterson, 48-45

Central Catholic edged Patterson, 48-45, in the nightcap of day 1 action at Patterson High School’s basketball tournament Thursday.
With Central Catholic ahead 46-45 and Patterson with the ball with less than 10 seconds, the Lumberjacks’ shot fell short and Central Catholic got the rebound.
A foul with 1 second left was called on Patterson, and Central Catholic’s Elijah Swan sank two free throws to give the Eagles a 48-45 lead.
After a quick inbounds, Patterson’s three-quarter court desperation shot fell short for the final score.
Central Catholic led 16-10 after a quarter of play Thursday, while Patterson outscored the Eagles, 14-10, in the second period to cut the Lumberjack deficit to 26-23 at halftime.
Patterson overcame its deficit in the third quarter, outscoring Central Catholic, 13-9, in the period for a 36-35 lead after three quarters.
Central Catholic countered with a 13-9 scoring advantage in the fourth quarter for the final margin.
Jalen Johnson and Swan led the Eagles with 16 points apiece, while Brooks Thomas had 13. Samarick Paul added three points.
Dajon Richard led Patterson with nine points. Other scorers included Jordan Butler, eight; John Brooks and Kai Schexnayder, six points apiece; Tyric Garrett and Drew Lucas, five each; Elijah Williams, four points; and Khyri Harris, two.
Patterson (2-3) will return to action Friday when it faces Jeanerette at 6:30 p.m. in Patterson’s tournament. Saturday, the Lumberjacks will meet Lafayette High at 2:30 p.m.
Central Catholic (2-1) will face St. Martinville in a 3:30 p.m. contest. The Eagles will close the tournament Saturday with a 4:30 p.m. contest against Morgan City.
Morgan City defeats
North Vermilion
Morgan City knocked off Class 3A’s second-ranked squad, North Vermilion, 52-44 at Patterson’s tournament Thursday.
The Tigers raced out to an 18-5 lead after a quarter against North Vermilion, the second-best team in Class 3A according to the Louisiana High School Athletic Association’s latest Class 3A power rankings released this week.
North Vermilion trimmed its deficit to 25-16 at halftime after outscoring Morgan City 11-7 in the second period.
Morgan City outscored North Vermilion, 15-12, in the third quarter to extend its lead to 40-28 after three periods before North Vermilion countered with a 16-12 fourth-quarter scoring advantage.
Morgan City made 10 three-pointers in the win.
Makye Richard led Morgan City with 15 points, while Deondre Grogan also reached double figures with 12 points. Other scorers included Jared Singleton and Tywaun Walker, five points apiece; Taaj Daniels, four points; Morrquise Charles, Ke’Sean Francois and Kerwin Francois, three points each; and DeAndre Long, two points.
Morgan City (8-3) will return to action Friday when it meets Berwick at 8 p.m. in Patterson’s tournament, while Saturday, Morgan City will face Central Catholic at 4:30 p.m.
Lafayette High
defeats Berwick
A big third quarter proved to be the difference as Lafayette High overcame a four-point halftime lead en route to a 56-51 win against Berwick in first-day action at Patterson’s tournament.
Trailing 27-23 at halftime, Lafayette High outscored Berwick, 21-12, in the third quarter for a 44-39 lead after three quarters.
Each team scored 12 points in the fourth quarter for the final score.
Berwick took a 17-14 lead after a quarter and extended its lead to 27-23 at the half.
Berwick made six three-pointers in the contest.
Larenz Clark led Berwick with 22 points, while Cody Roberie also reached double figures with 12 points. Other scorers included Josh Carver, nine; Tysin Meads, five; Travis Whitehead, two; and Donald Tillman, one.
Berwick (7-5) will return to action in Patterson’s tournament Friday when it faces Morgan City at 8 p.m., while Saturday, the Panthers will meet St. Martinville at 1 p.m. in the tournament.
