MORGAN CITY — The Central Catholic Lady Eagles rolled past Logansport en route to a 64-20 first-round victory Thursday night.
While the Lady Eagles were never threatened, racing out to a 14-0 lead and led 20-5 after one period and 42-10 at halftime, Central Catholic got a big scare just before halftime when star guard and Alabama signee Meo Knight landed awkwardly after being called for a charge on a shot with seconds remaining in the first half and grabbed her left knee.
After being attended to by the Central Catholic trainer for a few minutes, she walked off the court on her own but never returned.
Knight spent the third quarter with her leg propped up and ice on her knee.
Central Catholic coach Jamarr Garrett said he expected Knight to be OK.
“Right now we just think it’s a bruise,” Garrett said following the game. “When they both went up in the air … their knees hit together. We think she’s going to be fine, just a little rest most importantly and hopefully she’ll be ready to go Monday.”
Even in a half of action, Knight still managed a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds as well as six assists, three steals and one block.
Randi Brown led the Lady Eagles with a double-double with 26 points and 11 rebounds as well as one block, two steals and seven assists.
In the second half, Lady Eagle senior post player Gee Garrett recorded a nice performance when she scored 10 of her 14 points. She also finished the game with two blocks, two steals, one assist and three rebounds.
“It was very nice to see Gee finally step up. I knew she could play. It was just a matter of time before she showed the rest of the world she could play a little bit, and for the most part, she did a good job,” Jamarr Garrett said.
Garrett complimented both Brown and Gee Garrett’s ball handling in the second half.
The Lady Eagles outscored Logansport in both the third and fourth quarters by a combined 22-10.
Other top contributors for the Lady Eagles were Megan Landry, seven points, five steals, two assists and two rebounds; and Anastasia Johnson, three points, one steal and one rebound.
Central Catholic will return to action Monday when it hosts No. 15 seed St. Mary’s, a 29-26 winner against St. Frederick’s in other first-round action Thursday.
