Lumberjacks finish undefeated at Advance Physical Therapy Lumberjack Invitational

Staff Report

The Patterson Lumberjacks finished the weekend undefeated at the Advance Physical Therapy Lumberjack Invitation at Patterson High.
Patterson knocked off St. Martinville, 51-48, via a buzzer beater three-pointer by Nehemiah Augustus.
On Saturday, Patterson defeated Morgan City, 53-44.
In Saturday’s victory, Patterson took a 15-6 lead after a quarter and extended it to 27-16 at the half.
Patterson led 39-29 after three quarters.
Taylan Grogan led Patterson with 16 points, while Augustus scored 12 and Jordan Butler contributed seven points.
“This was a big win,” Patterson head coach Ryan Taylor said. “It's always nice to beat one of your rivals.”
However, Taylor said the moment to be most proud of during the day was when both teams came together in prayer after the contest for the family of Trevon Madise. Madise died Saturday after apparently sustaining a gunshot wound to the head Friday night in what the St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office said in a news release may have been an accidental shooting.
“This community is so close, and when tragic events happen, they are there for each other,” Taylor said. “I'm proud to coach such an awesome group of young men, and I know both Morgan City and Patterson should both be proud of their young men on their teams.”
In Friday night’s contest, a huge fourth quarter propelled Patterson to the come-from-behind victory.
Patterson outscored St. Martinville 13-3 in the period to turn a 45-38 deficit into a 51-48 win that was capped by Augustus’ game-winner.
“I was very proud of the guys’ effort,” Taylor said. “It wasn't pretty for a lot of the game, but the guys competed for the full 32 minutes and found a way to win the game. And Nehemiah's shot the end of the game was awesome. He never rushed or panicked. This was a huge win for this early part of the season.”
St. Martinville took a 17-12 lead after the first quarter and extended its lead to 33-24 at the half.
Augustus led Patterson with 22 points, while Grogan had 13 points. Kenneth Washington added six.
Patterson (5-2) won’t return to action until Dec. 26 when it begins play in St. Martinville’s tournament.
