Lumberjacks rout Bulldogs, 100-61

Jennings made a fatal error in Friday’s Class 3A bi-district playoff game at Patterson.
The No. 26 seed Bulldogs played up tempo and were routed by the No. 7 seed Lumberjacks, 100-61.
“We expected them to play that way because that is what they do,” Patterson head coach Ryan Taylor said. “I guess when you have a guy like (Draylan Perkins) who can really fill it up, you want him to get up and down the court and get as many shots as he can.”
Patterson (19-6), however, didn’t get off to a good start. The ’Jacks missed three straight layups to open the game before Kenneth Washington scored with 4:44 remaining in the first quarter.
“We started a little sluggish, missed some easy shots, just trying a little too hard to score,” Taylor said. “It took a while to get our legs under us and get into the rhythm of the game. It’s a first-round playoff game. Everybody is amped up, but I thought we did a good job of settling into the flow.”
Patterson trailed 9-4 with 2:28 left but made a run to end the first quarter down 12-9.
The ’Jacks opened the second period with a 3-point play by Daylon Charlot, which opened the flood gates, and they closed the quarter with another 3-point play by Nehemiah Augustus en route to a 40-21 halftime lead.
Augustus was the leading scorer at the half with 11 points while Charlot had nine, Mykel Jones had eight and Taylan Grogan had six.
Perkins led Jennings with 12.
Patterson continued to pour it on in the third quarter after a great no-look pass by Grogan led to a layup by Malik Garrett and a 46-26 lead with 5:58 to play in the period.
Jennings (12-16) then went to a full-court press that rattled Patterson, forcing a timeout at 2:29 with the lead down to 53-39.
“We kind of lost our focus there,” Taylor said. “We told the guys in the timeout that we didn’t do anything we practiced. In fact, we did the opposite, so we just had to settle down and refocus.”
The ’Jacks answered with a 3-pointer by Augustus and a steal and layup by Grogan in the final seconds to re-establish control, 62-44.
Patterson cruised through the fourth quarter, getting all of its players in the game.
The only suspense left was the ’Jacks would reach 100 points, which Devontre Richard christened with two free-throws just before the final buzzer.
Augustus led the Patterson scorers with 24 points off the bench.
“He’s done a great job of accepting that role,” Taylor said. “Like tonight, he came in in the first quarter, and he never came out the rest of the half. He finds ways to get people going. He plays 100 miles per hour at all times. He’s playing very well right now.”
Other top scorers were Grogan and Jones with 16 points each while Charlot had 15 and D.J. Jones, 10.
Perkins had 28 for Jennings while backcourt mate Dwayne Levi had 13.
Patterson will host De La Salle Tuesday at 7 p.m.
De La Salle (23-5), the 10th seed, beat No. 23 South Beauregard 79-48 in the first round.
The Cavaliers also beat the ’Jacks 80-70 in Patterson Dec. 22.
