MCHS beats CCHS 39-24

Morgan City High School defeated Central Catholic 39-22 Thursday in opening round action at Centerville’s Tournament of the Teche.
While Morgan City led just 5-4 after a quarter, the Lady Tigers outscored Central Catholic 11-2 in the second period, holding the Lady Eagles scoreless until around the final minute, as they took a 16-6 lead into halftime.
Morgan City led 23-12 after the third quarter.
Laqwaijha Bourgeois led Morgan City with 13 points.
Other scorers included Alisha Singleton and Meya Morse, each with eight; Twanna LeBeau, four; Elicia Dorsey, Hailey Lewis and Sh’Diamond Holly, all had two points.
Jalaysia Bertrand led Central Catholic with 10 points.
Other scorers included Hallie Autin, six points, four rebounds, five assists and two steals; and Lydia Rivas, six points, two rebounds and two steals.
Morgan City (2-1) will continue play today at 5:30 p.m. when it faces Centerville, a 31-16 winner against Berwick in other first-round action Thursday
Central Catholic (2-1) will face Jeanerette today at 4 p.m. in an elimination game. Jeanerette fell to Patterson 43-25 in another first-round game Thursday.
Patterson defeats Jeanerette
The Patterson High School Lumberjills defeated Jeanerette 43-25 Thursday in opening round action at Centerville’s Tournament of the Teche.
While the game was tied at five after a quarter, Patterson outscored Jeanerette 12-6 in the second period for a 17-11 halftime advantage.
Patterson led 27-16 after three quarters.
Nyla Holder led Patterson with 12 points.
Other scorers included Erykah Singleton and Makayla Ruiz, eight points apiece; Alex Benjamin, seven; Kemprielle Williams, five; Kemiah Watson, two; and Keonna Johnson, one.
Patterson (2-2), which has won two straight will continue tournament play today when it faces H.L. Bourgeois in a 7 p.m. contest.
Berwick falls to Centerville
The Berwick Lady Panthers fell to Centerville 31-16 Thursday in opening round action at Centerville’s Tournament of the Teche.
Centerville jumped out to a 16-0 lead after the first period, led 22-5 at the half and 29-12 after three quarters.
“We played really hard last night,” Berwick coach Wil Broussard said. “The girls are staying positive and want to continue to improve. I believe our defense improved as the game went on. Offensively, we missed too many easy shots. The good news is that it can be corrected with patience and practice.”
Madison Carline led Berwick with six points, while Jena Beiza added four.
Berwick (0-2) won’t return to action until Saturday at 10:30 a.m. when it faces the winner of the Central Catholic/Jeanerette contest.
