MCHS edges Sophie B. Wright, 7-0

Staff Report

Morgan City High School scored the game’s lone touchdown with less than two minutes remaining in the first half of Friday’s game with Sophie B. Wright and made it stick for a 7-0 victory in Morgan City.
The Tigers got the game’s lone touchdown when junior quarterback Isaiah Escort connected with senior receiver Keith Henderson on a 52-yard touchdown reception with 1:28 remaining in the half. Quang Nguyen connected on the point-after attempt for Morgan City for the eventual final score.
Escort completed 7 of 11 passes for 113 yards with a touchdown and an interception.
Henderson led the Tigers’ receivers with two receptions for 61 yards and a score.
Ethan Scioneaux led the Tigers’ ground game with nine carries for 41 yards.
Morgan City’s offense totaled just 213 yards in the win (113 passing and 103 rushing).
“We basically did the same thing we did against Berwick but not as bad of an extent,” Morgan City Coach Scott Tregle said. “We would drive the ball and then something would happen — a penalty or a fumble or we’d miss an assignment — just shoot ourself in the foot to kill our drive.”
Tregle said the Tigers (1-1) had a few “third-and-short” situations on offense, and the Tigers were unable to convert them into first down because of a Morgan City mistake.
“We got better from week 1, offensively,” Tregle said. “I thought they were similar to Berwick on defense. They put a lot of pressure on you up front in the box, and they have some athletes behind them.”
Defensively, Morgan City surrendered just 149 yards of offense, all on the ground. Sophie B. Wright was 0 for 4 passing with one interception, while the Tigers’ defense sacked the Warriors’ quarterback seven times.
“They had a lot of team speed and talent,” Tregle said of Sophie B. Wright. “They would break off some nice runs, and if they’d try to throw the ball, we (would) sack them most of the time. They couldn’t pass protect. We were putting so much heat on them, but they did have some good players.”
Sophie B. Wright (0-1) had three fumbles and lost two of them.
Tregle said Wright did move the ball but mistakes would hurt their drives.
“They couldn’t put it together for a long period of time because something would break down in their blocking or they’d fumble or something like that killed that drive,” he said.
Morgan City will return to action Friday when it hosts North Central in a 7 p.m. contest.
