Morgan City High School records mild upset of Berwick in district opener

Morgan City defeated Berwick, 3-1 (25-22, 25-21, 17-25, 25-18), in a mild upset in District 8-III play at Berwick Tuesday.
Morgan City (5-10 overall, 1-0 in district) came into the contest ranked No. 24 in the latest Louisiana High School Athletic Association Division III power rankings, while Berwick (7-10, 0-1) is ranked No. 21.
As a team, Morgan City had 44 kills, five blocks and seven aces.
Abby Reynaud led the Lady Tigers with 25 assists, two kills and one dig. Other top contributors included Sh’diamond Holly, 15 kills and five blocks; Paige Loftin, 14 kills and one dig; Karmen Peterson, nine kills and two aces; Mckenzi Smith, four kills and five digs; Katelyn Gautreaux, one ace and eight digs; and Emily Boudreaux, three aces.
As a team, Berwick totaled 30 kills and 107 digs.
Alyssa Gray led Berwick with one kill, 14 assists, three aces and 23 digs. Other top contributors included Mary Jordan Melancon, four kills, five assists and 17 digs; Brittney Roberie, 20 digs; Sydney Aucoin, 10 kills and six digs; Jordan Lipari, five kills, one assist and 10 digs; Roslyn Gros, one ace and 15 digs; Lauren Skinner, nine kills, four digs, one solo block and one block assist; Emma Hover, two aces and 10 digs; and Ryleigh Arnold, one kill, two digs and one block assist.
In junior varsity action, Morgan City defeated Berwick, 2-0 (27-25, 25-19).
Morgan City had six aces and 10 solo blocks.
Nia Lightfoot led Morgan City with nine kills, one ace and seven solo blocks. Other top contributors included Smith, one kill, 10 assists and four digs; Peterson, two kills, one dig and two solo blocks; Daysha Tivet, two aces and three digs; and Hallie Blanchard, two kills and two aces.
Morgan City will return to
action this weekend at Riverside Academy’s tournament.
Berwick will return to action Thursday when it hosts Vandebilt Catholic in district play. Vandebilt Catholic is ranked No. 3 in Division 3.
CCHS sweeps
John Curtis
Central Catholic swept John Curtis 3-0 (27-25, 25-20, 25-14) in volleyball action in Morgan City Tuesday.
Central Catholic had 36 kills, 76 digs and 19 solo blocks.
Hallie Autin led Central Catholic with 12 kills, two aces, 15 digs and two solo blocks. Other top contributors included Katie Hoffpauir, one kill, 16 assists, one ace and 13 digs; Quincee Wiggins, nine kills and 15 digs; Taylor Picou, one kill, 10 assists, one ace and seven digs; Brooke Lipari, one assist, one ace and 14 digs; Yani Johnson, seven kills, one dig and five solo blocks; Rebecca David, three kills, one dig and four solo blocks; Sydney Williams, one kill, two digs and four solo blocks; and Caroline Green, one kill, one dig and four solo blocks.
This weekend, the Lady Eagles finished second at Riverdale’s tournament, recording a 5-2 mark.
Central Catholic defeated Lutheran and Riverdale Friday. Saturday, Central Catholic defeated Edna Karr, fell to Riverside, defeated St. Martin’s, defeated Destrehan and fell to Riverside in the finals
Against Lutheran, Central Catholic won 2-0 (25-8, 25-9).
Central Catholic collected 19 aces.
Hoffpauir led Central Catholic with one kill, four assists and seven aces. Other top contributors included Autin, three kills and three aces; Lipari, four aces and two digs; Wiggins, one kill and five aces; Picou, one kill and four assists; and Williams, three kills and one assist.
Against Riverdale, Central Catholic won 2-1 (25-10, 26-28, 15-7).
As a team, Central Catholic had nine aces and six solo blocks.

Against Karr, Central Catholic won 2-0 (25-15, 25-23).
As a team, Central Catholic had 32 kills and hit for a .381 clip.

In its initial matchup against Riverside, Central Catholic fell 2-0 (25-21, 25-11).
As a team, Central Catholic hit for a .467 clip and had five solo blocks.
Williams led the team with seven kills and three solo blocks. Other top contributors included Hoffpauir, seven assists, one ace and two digs; Picou, three assists and six digs; and Lipari, seven digs.
Against St. Martin’s Episcopal, Central Catholic won 2-1 (18-25, 25-22, 15-11).
Central Catholic recorded eight aces and eight solo blocks.
Wiggins led Central Catholic with nine kills, three aces and 13 digs. Other top contributors included Hoffpauir, eight assists, two aces and seven digs; Picou, one kill, three assists, one ace and six digs; Ava Nicar, one kill and six digs; Lipari, six digs; and Emma Aucoin, one assist and five digs.
Against Destrehan, Central Catholic won 2-1 (23-25, 25-20, 15-4).

In the finals against Riverside, Central Catholic fell 2-0 (27-25, 25-19).
As a team, Central Catholic hit 0.395.
