Patterson routs Berwick, 55-7

By CORWIN MURRAY

Nehemiah Augustus’ nickname is “Menace” and the highly-coveted college football recruit was just that in Patterson’s 55-7 pummeling of Berwick Thursday at the Sugar Dome.
Augustus, ranked No. 44 in The Times-Picayune/Nola.com’s Nifty 50 as an athlete, scored four touchdowns to lead Patterson (4-2, 2-0) to the District 8-3A win.
The Lumberjacks rolled up 510 yards (226 passing, 284 rushing) of total offense against rival Berwick (2-4, 1-2).
Augustus opened the scoring with a 39-yard touchdown run at the 7:56 mark of the first quarter. Christian Soria added the point-after kick for a 7-0 lead.
Augustus, a senior, then intercepted a pass by Berwick quarterback Collin Louviere and raced 60 yards for his second touchdown of the night with 3:49 remaining in the first quarter. Soria added the extra-point kick, and Patterson was up 14-0 after a quarter.
The ’Jacks opened the second quarter with a 57-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Sirbatian Charles to a wide open K’hyri Harris for a touchdown. Patterson extended the margin to 21-0 with 10:39 left before the half.
Meanwhile, Berwick’s offense struggled for the second consecutive week. The Panthers managed just 164 yards of total offense (102 passing, 62 rushing).
Berwick had just three first-downs in the first half.
“They did a great job in defending us to keep us off the scoreboard,” Berwick Coach Craig Brodie said. “I thought the defense played well, overall. We did some good things, but we just couldn’t move the ball on offense.”
With 6:16 remaining in the first half, Patterson extended its lead when Charles found Augustus for a 19-yard score, giving Augustus his third touchdown of the half. Charles was 13-of-17 passing for 244 yards and four touchdowns.
“We looked good offensively, at times,” Patterson Coach Chad Blanchard said. “But, we had a couple penalties that were drive-killers, and we need to clean that up if we want to be successful down the road.”
Patterson led 28-0 at halftime.
In the third quarter, Patterson added scores from Mykel Jones on a beautiful 10-yard catch and run, while Augustus then capped his night with a 49-yard pass from Charles.
“He had a great night,” Blanchard said of Augustus. “We ask him to do a lot of different things because he’s capable of it. We moved him around on offense and took advantage of some matchups. Defensively, we put him on their best player, and he did a great job there, too.”
Augustus had three catches for 74 yards and two touchdowns, a 39-yard run for a score and 60-yard interception return for a touchdown.
Sophomore running back Dontre Nicholas added a 1-yard touchdown run to push Patterson’s lead to 49-0 with 1:19 in the third quarter. He carried 11 times in a row for 60 yards and a touchdown.
Audwin Williams, who was held without a catch last week, led Berwick with three catches for 80 yards.
Louviere completed 3-of-17 passes for 73 yards with two interceptions, while Cameron Wiley was 2-of-4 passing for 29 yards.
Berwick got on the scoreboard in the fourth quarter when the Panthers converted a Patterson fumble into a Wiley 10-yard touchdown run with 7:43 remaining. John McCorkle added the extra-point kick.
“I’m proud of the kids’ effort, and they still have something to play for,” Brodie said. “I think we need to get two more wins to have a chance to play in the postseason. We have to keep playing like there will be some good things at the end of the season.”
Leading 49-7, Patterson freshman running back Dajon Richard capped the night’s scoring with a 17-yard touchdown run with 2:39 left.
Patterson will travel to longtime nemesis E.D. White in a key district matchup next week, while Berwick will host Kaplan.
