The Morgan City High School soccer team kicked off the Division II playoffs in a big way with an 8-0 rout against West Ouachita Feb. 5.
The Tigers, the No. 11 seed, got goals from six different players in the victory including a hat trick by Irving Delgado.
The Tigers took a 3-0 halftime lead before adding four goals in the second half.
Despite the dominant final, the Tigers started off slow, Morgan City coach Trevor Patterson said, because he sat out a few players for discipline reasons.
However, when the Tigers (11-8-3) got to full strength on the field, they began to make noise.
“Yesterday we had a practice and some of our starters decided not to come so I kind of wanted them to sit out and realize that it’s a team thing,” Patterson said. “They all need to be here. Once we put them in, you could see the difference. And it was good to have some of the younger boys playing and a couple of them had some chances to score. One of them scored at the end.”
Delgado got the Tigers’ first goal in the 28th minute after receiving a pass from Brayan Aleman.
Three minutes later, the Tigers’ Miguel Perez connected on a goal after receiving a pass from Wilmer Lopez.
Delgado concluded the first-half scoring for Morgan City with a goal in the 39th minute for a 3-0 advantage.
West Ouachita (5-21) had a shot at a goal before half but Morgan City goalie Daniel Valadez made a stop on a free kick by West Ouachita’s Noah White.
In the second half, Morgan City scored two goals within four minutes as Delgado got his hat trick in the 42nd minute, while four minutes later, Hector Calderon knocked the ball in after a series of plays near the West Ouachita goal, which included two headers by Morgan City, for a 5-0 advantage.
Morgan City added goals in the 53rd minute via goal by Lopez and another in the 55th minute on a long shot by Robert Prejeant.
Morgan City concluded its scoring via a goal by Edgar Calderon in the 76th minute.
Patterson, who expects to play district foe E.D. White in the second round, said he wanted to work on preps for E.D. White in the second half. E.D. White, the No. 6 seed, plays No. 27 seed Bastrop today in Thibodaux.
Following the game, West Ouachita coach Chris Cavin said his team had been a “little bit lackluster on offense this year in general. We didn’t score a lot of goals. Our strength was primarily our defense and we just had a couple of bad breaks this game.”
