Halimar Shipyard 7,
Cardinal Lumber 6
Halimar Shipyard (Central Catholic) survived a huge rally by Cardinal Lumber (Patterson) in the last two innings of Monday’s Swampland league contest in Amelia for a 7-6 victory Monday.
While Halimar led 7-0 heading into the top of the sixth, Cardinal Lumber scored two runs in the frame before responding with four more in the top of the seventh.
“I was pleased with the way our kids battled for (seven) innings last night,” Cardinal Lumber head coach Ryan Jensen said. “We didn’t have a hit until the (fifth) inning and had some real struggles defensively and could have hung our heads and quit.”
Cardinal Lumber was plagued by errors in the contest as they committed eight, while Halimar had two miscues.
“We had to have a lot of guys step into positions and roles that they don’t normally have to fill, and even though it wasn’t pretty a lot of the time, we didn’t make excuses and just kept playing,” Jensen said. “That attitude and mindset can lead to good things in the spring.”
Each team had eight hits.
Halimar Shipyard did all of its offensive damage in the second through fourth innings as they scored a run in the second and three each in the third and fourth innings for a 7-0 lead.
