South Lafourche was successful on offense and took advantage of Morgan City’s miscues en route to a 59-0 victory in both teams’ District 7-4A opener Thursday in Morgan City.
South Lafourche (2-4 overall, 1-0 in district) scored touchdowns on its first two drives and blocked a Morgan City punt for another score for a 22-0 lead late in the first quarter.
The Tarpons added three second-quarter touchdowns and three more in the fourth.
“They just beat us on every aspect of the game,” Morgan City Coach Scott Tregle said. “Offense, defense, special teams. They beat us up front. … There’s nothing more we could have done. Some of the kids were intimidated after some of that.”
Tregle said some older Morgan City starters were injured and didn’t play. They were replaced by younger guys this week.
“But its no excuses,” Tregle said. “They came out with a good game plan, and they executed. They didn’t make any mistakes, and they just beat us, beat us bad.
While the Tarpons offense was impressive with four different players scoring touchdowns, its defense was equally good, limiting Morgan City to minus-32 yards of offense and minus-24 yards of total offense.
The negative yardage throughout the game came off the strength of nearly 10 sacks and a bad snap on a punt attempt.
While Morgan City (3-3, 0-1) was able to improve its numbers in the second half, at halftime, the Tarpons had limited the Tigers run game to minus-72 yards rushing and -62 yards of total offense.
South Lafourche received the ball to start the game and needed just three plays to score.
On third down and five from the Tarpons 45, quarterback Jaydon Cheramie connected with Marquis Francis, who took the short reception 55 yards for a touchdown with 10:41 left. The extra point gave South Lafourche a 7-0 lead.
While Morgan City was forced to punt on its next possession, the snap on the punt attempt was too high for Morgan City’s Kalen Hillen and resulted in a loss of 27 yards.
With the ball at the Morgan City 13, South Lafourche gained five yards due to a Morgan City penalty before scoring one play later on Douglas Guidry scored on an 8-yard run. The extra point was good for a 14-0 South Lafourche lead with 8:39 remaining in the first quarter.
While South Lafourche recovered an onside kick on the ensuing kickoff, the Tarpons could not cash in.
Twice on the drive South Lafourche reached the end zone, but twice the Tarpons were denied due to penalties.
Morgan City stopped them on fourth down at the Tigers’ 23, to take possession.
However, South Lafourche was able to score on special teams as it blocked Hillen’s punt after a three-and-out on the ensuing possession, and Terry Hunter recovered it in the end zone for a score.
Austin Georges’ two-point run was good for a 22-0 South Lafourche lead with 2:51 remaining in the first quarter.
While Morgan City lost a fumble on its next offensive possession, the Tigers defense came up with a big fourth down stop at its own 32, tackling Guidry for a 1-yard loss on a fourth-down-and-1 situation.
The Tigers hurt themselves after the stop, though, with another turnover that South Lafourche cashed in on via a Cheramie 14-yard touchdown pass to Francis with 10:58 remaining in the second quarter. The Tarpons now led 28-0.
Francis led South Lafourche with three catches for 85 yards and two touchdowns, while Cheramie completed 6 of 13 pass attempts for 95 yards and two scores.
The Tigers’ best possession of the game came on its ensuing drive, bolstered by Scott Comeaux’s 46-yard kickoff return to the South Lafourche 40.
While Morgan City moved the ball to the South Lafourche 23, quarterback Alex Brocato was sacked on fourth-and-five, ending the threat.
South Lafourche scored touchdowns on its next two possessions via a Jake Galijour 5-yard run and a Guidry 3-yard run with 1:18 remaining for a 40-0 lead.
Guidry only had 10 carries for 38 yards, but he scored three touchdowns.
South Lafourche (2-4 overall, 1-0 in district) added three fourth-quarter touchdowns, a 3-yard run by Corey Cheramie, a 24-yard run by backup quarterback Brock Bailleaux and a Guidry 4-yard run. The last touchdown was set up by a Morgan City fumble on its kickoff return.
Corey Cheramie led South Lafourche with 10 carries for 71 yards and a touchdown, while Bailleaux had seven carries for 50 yards and a score.
Chris Fabre led Morgan City’s rushing attack with 4 carries for 20 yards, while Brocato, who split time with Isaiah Escort, led the Tigers’ passing game with 3 completions on 8 pass attempts for 11 yards.
Morgan City will return to action Friday when it travels to face Ellender in a District 7-4A contest.
