Tigers will host Hornets in nondistrict action

MORGAN CITY — The Morgan City Tigers will host Franklin Friday, who head coach Dennis Lorio calls “one of the most improved teams on our schedule.”
Lorio said Franklin coach J. Ina has “done a good job getting the program back moving.”
The Morgan City coach said that Franklin is aggressive in its 4-3 defense, while on offense they run a multiple attack with a “power game” and sometimes they will “spread it out” and throw the ball.
Lorio said Franklin (1-3) has talented receivers and a quarterback.
In last week’s win, the Hornets had to rally late for a 20-14 victory against Erath after surrendering the lead in the fourth quarter.
While Franklin held a 14-0 lead, Erath scored two touchdowns within about a two-minute time frame to tie the game at 14 with 6:02 remaining.
However, Franklin scored the winning points with a 13-play, 71-yard drive capped by Brandon McFarlane’s 9-yard run with 27.8 seconds remaining.
McFarlane rushed 15 times for 83 yards in the contest.
As for Morgan City, Lorio said the Tigers (0-5) had good practices this week.
“They’ve done a good job adjusting to all the challenges we’re facing,” Lorio said.
In last week’s 45-0 loss to Livonia, the Tigers had to utilize several younger players, including freshman Hector Tolento at quarterback, due to injuries.
During the contest, the Tigers lost two more players, Darryl Johnson and Kevon Marsh, to injury.
As for their status this week, Lorio said Johnson was “limited” in practice, while he said the Tigers’ starting quarterback, Jaylen Jones, was “very limited” in practice.
“Some of them are going to be game-time decisions,” Lorio said of the injuries.
Lorio said the status of Kolbi Chatman, another Tiger out with injury last week, was “uncertain,” while he said Marsh will be back this week.
“He’s doing fine,” Lorio said of Marsh, who sat out the second half last week and was on crutches following the game. “He’s a battler. He’s a tough kid. He’s had some bumps and bruises, and he keeps on going.”
Marsh leads the Tigers’ ground game this season with 47 carries for 204 yards and two touchdowns.
Kickoff for Friday’s contest is set for 7 p.m. at Tiger Stadium.
