Flores nets seven awards at LOWA conference

It’s always exciting to represent our two local newspapers here in St. Mary Parish and bring attention to what I think is the perfect place to live and enjoy the outdoors in the state of Louisiana.

John Flores, The Daily Review and Banner-Tribune outdoor writer as well as a magazine freelancer, received seven awards in four categories in the 2014 Excellence in Craft competition at the Louisiana Outdoor Writers Association’s 69th annual conference Saturday.
Flores took first- and third-place honors in the newspaper category, first- and third-place in color photography category, first- and second-place in the black and white photography category, and third place in the electronic submissions category.
His first-place newspaper article was “Cocodrie Diva Catches Stingray — State Record Pending,” while his third-place winning entry in the category was “Louisiana Couple Only Miss Rio.”
In the Electronic Media category, Flores’ third-place entry was “4-H Shooting Program Scores High Marks.”
His two Black and White Still Photograph entries were “Maestro of the March,” which won first place, and “The Final Approach,” which took second place.
Flores’ two Color Still Photograph winning entries were first-place, “Duck Darling,” and third-place “Margarita Morning.”
“It’s always exciting to represent our two local newspapers here in St. Mary Parish and bring attention to what I think is the perfect place to live and enjoy the outdoors in the state of Louisiana,” Flores said in a news release. “We have access to some of the best freshwater fishing as the gateway to the Atchafalaya Basin, as well as tremendous saltwater fishing from Halter’s Island to Point Au Fer to Vermilion Bay on the west side of the parish and places in between. Love for the outdoors runs deep in the Tri-City area with so many families living the camp-life on weekends down the bayou somewhere. Everyone has a story to tell, and I love to share those stories with others.”
The EIC contest, which recognizes excellence within various categories of outdoor-related communications, has been held continuously since 1945.
The organization presented awards for Youth Journalism, Fish of Year, Youth Hunters of the Year and the association’s Internal Excellence In Craft Awards, where LOWA writers are recognized annually for their contributions.
The Georgia Outdoor Writers Association judged the contest entries.
