Lange takes the 4th annual Atchafalaya Championship

Staff Report

Andy Lange fired a (75-71) 146 to win the Players Division of the 4th Annual Atchafalaya Championship Oct. 12.
The tournament was a stroke-play event over 36 holes.
Finishing second, three shots back, was Charles Mayea with a (77-72) 149. Doug Streety finished third with an (82-79) 161, and Kenton Sinitiere placed fourth with a (78-85) 163.
Lange turned the front nine on Sunday in even-par, 36. Mayea scored 38, giving Lange a four stroke advantage with nine to play.
“Charles is a strong competitor,” Lange said in a news release. “He put pressure on me all day, hitting iron shots close to the hole. Thirteen was a key hole. He had an eagle putt from 15 feet, which he made, and mine was just inside of his, and I was able to make it. Then on 17, our tee shots were pin high to the right of the green, and I hit a good pitch to within two feet for birdie. Charles chipped to within five feet but missed the putt. That gave me a little breathing room and made the tee shot on 18 a lot easier.”
Lange said, “Charles missed some makeable putts today; good putts that just didn’t fall. This year I felt I could concentrate better. Playing shot for shot was the key. Playing regularly at Atchafalaya in weekly matches against good players has helped me.”
The Senior Division was won by Glenn Jumonville, who fired a remarkable (71-67) 138.
“Terry (Dover) had a 68 the first day, and he made three birdies on the front nine Sunday but had two double bogies to go with it,” Jumonville said in a news release. “I was able to make up the difference and go one ahead with nine to play. On the back nine, I birdied five holes and shot (a) 31. I made a few putts this week. Ironically, I haven’t been practicing much, but the greens are in good condition and I got hot with the putter.”
Low net in the Senior Division belonged to Ricky Granger, scoring a (63-71) 134.
In the Super Senior Division, defending senior champion Bill Marin led all players with a (71-73) 144, winning by 20 strokes over his nearest competitor.
“I was happy with my ball striking, but left a few putts out there,” Marin said in the release. “Still, it was a steady two days of play.”
Low net went to Gerard Eldridge, who scored a (70-70) 140.
Dwayne Broussard provided cypress plaques for the winners. Winners also received gift cards to the golf shop.
Plans are for a cypress plaque to be displayed in the clubhouse. Defending champion for the first two years of the event was Mayea. Last year’s winner was Tillman Simmons.
