SMC 10s and 12s, MC 12s lone Tri-City area teams remaining

St. Mary Central’s 10- and 12-year-old all-stars as well as Morgan City’s 12-year-old All-Stars remain in Louisiana Dixie Youth Regional play.
St. Mary Central’s 10U squad dropped to the loser’s bracket of the South Regional after falling to Franklin, 8-2, Sunday evening in a winner’s bracket final.
Prior to the loss, St. Mary Central was 2-0 in tournament play, defeating Benton, 14-0, in first-round action Friday and Jackson Parish, 5-2, in second-round play Saturday.
St. Mary Central will return to action today in an elimination contest against Mamou at 5 p.m. at Cypress Park in Morgan City.
Against Jackson Parish, St. Mary Central took a 4-0 lead in the top of the first.
The score remained the same until the bottom of the fourth when Jackson scored two runs to cut its deficit to 4-2.
St. Mary Central added the game’s final run in the top of the sixth.
Dawson Richard pitched three innings for St. Mary Central and surrendered two earned runs on four hits with two walks and one strikeout. In three innings of relief, Hayden Robinson surrendered no hits and fanned five.
Offensively, Cru Bella led St. Mary Central with a 1-for-1 performance with an RBI and a run. Other top offensive contributors included Zack S., 1-for-3 with an RBI and a run; and Thomas Nini and Kaleb L, each an RBI.
St. Mary Central 12s 2-1 this weekend
St. Mary Central’s 12-year-old All-Stars finished 2-1 this weekend.
After falling to Ville Platte, 6-1, in its tournament opener Friday, St. Mary Central rebounded with a pair of run-rule victories: a 10-0 victory against Franklin Saturday and a 14-4 win against Alexandria Sunday.
St. Mary Central will look to remain alive in the tournament when it faces Minden today at 5:30 p.m. at the Bayou Vista Community Center.
In Friday’s loss, Ville Platte scored the game’s first six runs, plating three in the second, one in the fifth and two more in the sixth for a 6-0 lead.
St. Mary Central scored its lone run in its final at bat.
The teams combined for just eight hits, just two of those for St. Mary Central.
Luke Zerangue led St. Mary Central with a 1-for-1 performance. Other top offensive contributors included Clay Menard, 1-for-3; and Ross Thomas, an RBI.
Carter “JoJo” Williams suffered the loss. In five innings, he surrendered four runs – three earned – on three hits with six walks and eight strikeouts.
Nick Spitale pitched an inning of relief and surrendered two earned runs on three hits with three strikeouts.
In Saturday’s win against Franklin, St. Mary Central scored all of its runs in the bottom of the first. The game was called in the fourth inning due to the mercy rule.
St. Mary Central totaled just five hits in the win but walked eight times.
Thomas and Menard combined for a one-hitter. Thomas earned the win in three innings of work. He surrendered no hits and fanned three. In an inning of relief, Menard surrendered one hit, one walk and fanned three.
Offensively, Owen Thorguson led St. Mary Central with a 1-for-2 performance with two RBIs and a run. Other top offensive contributors included Trevor Berryhill, 1-for-1, an RBI and a run; Drew Rock, Jackson Thorguson and Nick Spitale, each an RBI and a run; Tanner Simmons and Zerangue, each 1-for-2 with an RBI and a run; Menard, 1-for-2, an RBI; and Gavin Baudoin, a run.
Against Alexandria, St. Mary Central fell behind 1-0 in the top of the first, but took the lead for good in the bottom of the inning with five runs.
While Alexandria scored three runs in the top of the second to cut its deficit to 5-3, St. Mary Central countered with three runs in the bottom of the third and six more in the bottom of the fourth to end the game via mercy rule.
St. Mary Central outhit Alexandria just 7-4. St. Mary Central had two errors, while Alexandria pitching combined for 13 walks.
Thomas led St. Mary Central with a 3-for-3 performance with a double, two RBIs and two runs. Other top offensive contributors included Menard, 2-for-4, an RBI and a run; Zerangue, 1-for-1, a double, two RBIs, three runs and a stolen base; Owen Thorguson, 1-for-3, a double, two RBIs and a run; Spitale, three RBIs and a run; Simmons and Landry, each an RBI and a run; Rock, two runs and a stolen base; and Williams, two runs.
On the mound, Spitale pitched an inning and surrendered four runs – two earned – on two hits with three walks and one strikeout.
Thomas pitched three innings of relief and surrendered two hits and fanned five.
MC 12s finish 1-1
The Morgan City 12s finished the weekend 1-1 with a 3-2 loss to the Vernon Nationals in seven innings Friday before rebounding with a 6-5 victory against Thibodaux Saturday.
Morgan City’s elimination contest against the Gonzales Nationals Sunday was rained out and was played this morning.
Against the Vernon Nationals, each team scored a run in the first and Morgan City took a 2-1 lead in the top of the third.
Vernon tied the game at 2 in the bottom of the fourth.
The score remained the same until the bottom of the seventh when Vernon plated the winning run.
Vernon outhit Morgan City, 5-4, and Vernon overcame two errors for the victory.
Caleb Menina led Morgan City with a 1-for-2 performance with a run, while Brayden Landry was 1-for-3 with an RBI. Other top offensive contributors included Andy Gros and Bryson Dupuy, each 1-for-2; and Robbie Boudreaux, a run.
Against Thibodaux, each team scored two runs in the first inning.
While Morgan City took a 5-2 lead after three, Thibodaux came back with two runs in the fourth and another in the fifth.
Morgan City plated the winning run in the bottom of the sixth.
Each team had five hits. Morgan City had three errors and Thibodaux, two miscues.
Dylan Cornes led Morgan City with a 2-for-3 performance with an RBI and two runs. Other top offensive contributors included Menina, 1-for-1, two RBIs and two runs; Riley Theriot, 1-for-2, an RBI; Andy Gros, 1-for-2; Spencer Hebert, an RBI; and Haydn Bailey, a run.
Cornes pitched three innings and surrendered two runs – both earned – on three hits with one walk and fanned nine.
In three innings of relief, Menina surrendered three unearned runs on two hits with two walks, one hit batter and fanned five.
