MCHS baseball jamboree set
MORGAN CITY — Morgan City High School’s annual varsity jamboree will be held Saturday at Tiger Diamond.
The all-St. Mary Parish field will feature Patterson, Hanson, Morgan City, Berwick and Franklin.
Games will last either one hour and 15 minutes or three innings.
Below is a schedule of the action:
—Patterson vs. Hanson, 9 a.m.
—Morgan City vs. Hanson, 10:30 a.m.
—Berwick vs. Franklin, noon.
—Franklin vs. Patterson, 1:30 p.m.
—Morgan City vs. Berwick, 3 p.m.

Central Catholic hits the road for jamboree
The Central Catholic Eagles will participate in jamboree action at Central Lafourche’s jamboree in Matthews.
The Eagles will face host Central Lafourche at 10 a.m. before facing South Lafourche at 11 a.m.

Softball teams to participate in jamborees
Area softball teams will compete in three different jamborees today or Saturday as they conclude their final exhibitions before starting their regular seasons.
Patterson will start things off today when they compete in Franklin High’s jamboree.
The Lumberjills will meet Franklin at 4 p.m. and also will meet Centerville at 6 p.m.
On Saturday, Central Catholic and Berwick will participate in Teurlings Catholic’s jamboree Saturday, while Morgan City will be in action at Assumption’s jamboree.
Central Catholic will face Lafayette High at 10 a.m. and host Teurlings at 1:15 p.m.
Berwick will face Notre Dame at 11 a.m. and Kaplan at 12:15 p.m.
Meanwhile, Morgan City will open its jamboree action with a 10 a.m. contest against John Curtis while also facing E.D. White at 1 p.m.

Northwestern State hires new defensive coordinator
NATCHITOCHES — Northwestern State has named Daryl Daye its new defensive coordinator and assistant head coach.
Daye, head coach for the last three seasons at Division II Missouri Southern, announced his departure from the Lions’ program Thursday to join the Demons’ program and coach Jay Thomas.
Daye replaces Mike Lucas, who joined Louisiana-Lafayette’s staff as a linebackers coach in the offseason.
Daye has been a defensive coordinator for four seasons at Missouri Southern and eight seasons at Liberty. He also spent two seasons with the Buffalo Bills assisting then-head coach Dave Wannstedt.
Thomas said Daye will be on campus in a few days to begin preparations for spring practice.

Louisiana Tech beats Charlotte, 83-82 in OT
CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Alex Hamilton scored four of his 29 points in overtime to help Louisiana Tech beat Charlotte 83-82 Thursday night.
Raheem Appleby scored on a layup and Hamilton added back-to-back layups as the Bulldogs used a 6-1 surge to build a 79-74 lead with 3:00 left in overtime. Charlotte’s Mike Thorne Jr. answered with a bucket to make it 79-76, but the 49ers missed their next three shots before Kenneth Smith and Appleby each made a pair of free throws to push the Bulldogs lead to 83-79 with six seconds left. Pierria Henry hit a three for the 49ers to end it.
Michale Kyser added a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds for Louisiana Tech (21-6, 12-2, Conference USA), which has won four straight.
Braxton Ogbueze scored 16 points to lead five players in double figures for Charlotte (11-15, 4-9). Thorne finished with 13 points and 10 boards.

UCF powers past Tulane, 69-55
NEW ORLEANS — Kasey Wilson scored 20 points, including tying a career-high with five 3-pointers, and added seven rebounds to help lead UCF to a 69-55 victory against Tulane Thursday night.
B.J. Taylor finished with 16 points and Adonys Henriquez added 15 points for UCF (12-13, 5-9 American Athletic), which shot 53.3 percent from the field and hit 12 3-pointers. Overall, the Knights are 7-0 this season when shooting better than 50 percent.
UCF ended the first half on a 13-4 run, capped by a Wilson 3-pointer to take a 34-24 lead into the locker room.
The Knights lead grew to as many as 16 late in the second half.
Jonathan Stark scored 15 points and dished out seven assists to lead Tulane (14-11, 5-8), which has lost five straight at home and six of its last seven overall.

Pelicans acquire, then waive Smith in deal with Thunder
NEW ORLEANS — The New Orleans Pelicans traded a protected 2016 second-round pick to the Oklahoma City Thunder Thursday in exchange for Ish Smith, a 2015 protected second-round pick, the rights to forward Latavious Williams and cash considerations.
The Pelicans then waived Smith, a 6-foot guard who has appeared in 30 games this season with Oklahoma City, averaging 1.2 points, 0.9 rebounds and 0.9 assists. Smith also has played for Phoenix, Orlando, Houston, Milwaukee and Memphis
The 25-year-old Williams is a forward with Bilbao of the Spanish League. He’s 6-8.
