St. Martinville police chief retiring Friday

ST. MARTINVILLE, La. (AP) — St. Martinville police Chief Paula Smith is retiring.
KATC-TV reports (http://bit.ly/1oaz1Q8 ) City Councilman Mike Fuselier confirmed Smith's retirement Thursday morning, though he said he's not sure when she is leaving the department.
Detective Lance Laviolette (LAHV-u-lette) says Smith's last day is Friday. He says she's been with the department for 37 years, serving 10 years as chief.
News of Smith's retirement comes after the City Council voted May 5 to suspend her for two days without pay. Mayor Pro Tem Craig Prosper said the suspension was due to Smith's failure to generate monthly reports on citations and tickets, as well as community concerns about the overall competency of the police department.
