Swampland tourney begins today

Staff Report

About the only thing certain among the top five teams entering the last day of the Swampland baseball season was that Halimar Shipyard (Central Catholic) would not be participating in the postseason this year.
While the squad was one of the top five teams in position to potentially take one of the top three spots and advance to today’s postseason tournament, coach Tyler Jensen said his squad would not participate because they had been playing baseball “non-stop” since January and needed time to rest from a lengthy season that concluded in mid-May with a loss in the Class 1A semifinals.
Other than that certainty, there was a log-jam atop the standings as the final day of action featured matchups between the Braves (H.L. Bourgeois) and Skipper’s Sporting Goods (Morgan City), and Taco Bell (Berwick) and BCG Services (Covenant Christian) that could have altered seedings entering the postseason tournament.
Turns out, no games were played Tuesday involving area teams due to rainouts.
Now, entering today’s tournament, which is in the new format with the top three teams from each division advancing to the postseason, Taco Bell will be the lone representative from St. Mary Parish. They are seeded third in Division A and will play Division B’s second seed, Robichaux Ford (Vandebilt Catholic), today in a 7 p.m. contest.
In game 1 today, Division A’s second seed, the Braves (H.L. Bourgeois), will face Division B’s third seed, Jester’s Court (Central Lafourche) in a 5 p.m. contest.
The winner of the Braves-Jester’s Court matchup will face Division B’s top seed, BCG Services (Covenant Christian), Thursday at 5 p.m., while the Taco Bell-Robichaux Ford winner will meet Synergy Bank (E.D. White), Division A’s top seed, in a second semifinal contest set for 7 p.m.
The championship game is set for Friday at 5 p.m.
