Knight leads Bama in scoring in loss

The University of Alabama women’s basketball team dropped a 66-50 decision at No. 15/18 Mississippi State Sunday at Humphrey Coliseum.
Freshman Meoshonti Knight, a former Central Catholic High School standout, led Alabama in scoring, reaching double figures for the third straight game with 13 points. She also had five rebounds, one block and one steal.
Sophomore Ashley Williams was just shy of a double-double with nine points and nine rebounds for Alabama.
Mississippi State (19-2, 4-2) was led by senior Kendra Grant, who had 17 points.
For the game, Alabama (11-9 overall, 0-5 in Southeastern Conference) was 30.2 percent (13-43) from the floor, while Mississippi State hit 37.5 percent (21-56) of its attempts.
The Tide outrebounded the Bulldogs, 36-34, and outscored Mississippi State, 22-16, in the paint.
Combined, there were 53 free throws taken in the game, where Alabama hit 23 of its 31 chances.
The game went back and forth for the first five minutes, but Mississippi State used a 13-1 run from there to take a 22-10 lead with 8:19 remaining.
The Bulldogs led by as many as 14 in the period and would hold a 37-27 advantage at the half.
Alabama gradually chipped away at its deficit, cutting the Mississippi State lead down to three with 10:15 to go, but five unanswered points by the Bulldogs extended their lead back out to eight.
Mississippi State would remain in front for the duration of the game.
Alabama returns to Tuscaloosa for the first of two consecutive home games when it hosts Auburn Thursday. The game will tip at 8 p.m. on Fox Sports South.
