Randi Brown earns Southland Conference Third-Team honors

Staff Report

University of New Orleans sophomore Randi Brown earned a conference superlative for the second consecutive season when she was named to the All-Southland Conference third team, the conference office announced Tuesday afternoon.
Brown was the conference Freshman of the Year in 2015.
The sophomore guard from Houma, a former Central Catholic High standout, was in the top five in scoring throughout the majority of the season, averaging 17.3 points per game. That was the highest scoring average by a Privateer since Kayone Hawkins averaged 18.5 points per game in 1994-95.
Brown also surpassed the 800-point mark for her career in the season finale against Northwestern State.
“I’m very proud of her and the effort she’s put in,” New Orleans Coach Keeshawn Davenport said in a news release. “I know if Randi could trade third-team all-conference for a trip to Katy, she would, but I’m very happy for her. Everything she does is for the team even though she’s been individually recognized. It’s a testament to the work she put in, and I expect for that to improve for her to second or first team next year as we improve overall as a team in the Southland Conference.”
Brown set a new career high for points in a game against McNeese State on Jan. 30, when she scored 39. Brown had 10 games of 20 or more points this season.
In the first of two wins against Southeastern, Brown also notched her first career double-double with 18 points and a career high 14 rebounds.
The season also featured a highlight game-winning three-pointer to defeat Stephen F. Austin. It was one of 53 triples Brown made this season, which put her 10th among Southland players in that category.
Brown also has already vaulted herself to eighth place in program history with 99 three-pointers in her first two seasons.
The sophomore standout also averaged four rebounds and 2.1 assists.
Brown led the team in steals with 33 and made 101-of-132 free throws for a 76.5 percent clip.
Brown set a new career mark for assists in a game Jan. 9, when she dished out eight against Sam Houston State.
