Southern University beats Alabama State, 31-28

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — Dray Joseph threw for four touchdowns to lead Southern University to a 31-28 victory over Alabama State on Saturday night.

Joseph was 26-of-45 for 432 yards. His favorite target was wide receiver Mike Jones with five receptions for 211 yards and three touchdowns. Jones nabbed a 68-yarder early in the first quarter and 74-yard pass for another TD to start the fourth. The Jaguars (6-4, 6-2 SWAC) had just 55 yards rushing.

The Hornets (6-4, 6-2) scored first on a 23-yard TD pass from Daniel Duhart to Jamel Johnson and finished the half with a 21-14 lead. Duhart ended the day 16-of-28 for 181 yards and two touchdowns.

The second half was scoreless until Southern came roaring back with back-to-back Joseph TD passes to Jones, followed by a Pittman field goal with just 18 seconds left in the game.

Southern University now leads in the SWAC west.
