Stewart will participate in Houston Pro Day Thursday

By CORWIN MURRAY

Former University of Houston and Patterson High School standout Trevon Stewart braces for the “biggest interview of my life,” at Thursday’s pro day in Houston.
Stewart, a 5-foot-9, 193-pound safety, ended his career with the Cougars as the school’s all-time record holder for career fumble recoveries with 10, and he’s also seventh on the UH career interceptions chart with 12. Stewart finished ninth on the Houston career tackles chart with 367. He also picked off two passes and recovered a fumble in Houston’s big Peach Bowl win over Florida State.
“I tried to improve every year at Houston,” Stewart said. “I worked as hard as I could and I was able to make an impact on the field.”
Despite his record-setting career on the field, Stewart wasn’t invited to the NFL scouting combine in late February.
“I didn’t make a big deal out of it,” Stewart said. “I just have to go out there Thursday and prove my point. Half of the players in the league didn’t get invited to the combine. Besides, I’ve been overlooked since high school because of my size, but I continue to prove people wrong.”
Stewart started training for Thursday’s pro day two days after the Peach Bowl at The Duke Academy in Daytona, Florida, with trainer Duke Rousse.
“It was a great process and the hardest work of my life,” he said. “I worked on speed and technique the entire time to make sure I was right. I’m shooting for a 4.4 second 40-yard dash and a strong vertical jump. Those are the numbers teams really want to see on me.”
Stewart, however, battled constant change in his college career at Houston.
“I don’t make any excuses,” he said. “I just have to show the next level that I can make plays at that level too. I had two head coaches and three defensive coordinators at UH, and I played all four positions (free safety, strong safety, left cornerback and right cornerback) during my career. That’s not what you really want, but I made the best of it.”
Stewart was named a Freshman All-American by the Football Writers Association of America in 2013. He led all freshmen nationally and was 13th regardless of class with 126 tackles, and he capped his career by being named to the Associated Press’ All-Bowl Team for his extraordinary play in
Houston’s Peach Bowl win.
Stewart said he hasn’t heard much from teams because he’s been focused on his training, but one team has already invited him for a tryout April 9.
“Everyone says they’re waiting on my pro day numbers before they bring me in, but the Saints have set up a tryout for me already. But I can’t go in thinking like it’s the Saints. Everyone would love it if I played in New Orleans. I just have to go out there and show them what I can do just like I will
for any other team.”
The 81st annual NFL draft is April 28-30 in Chicago. Stewart is currently projected as a late round to free agent selection by several draft sites.
“I don’t mind being the underdog,” Stewart said. “Like I said, I’ve been one since I started playing football. I’ll use that chip on my shoulder to work even harder, and I will make a team. I’ve got my family, my friends and people in Patterson and Houston rooting for me, and I won’t let them or myself down.”
