A 28-year-old Bayou Vista man was charged Wednesday after he was accused of fleeing the scene of two wrecks just six minutes apart on U.S. 90 and La. 182 in Bayou Vista, according to St. Mary Parish Sheriff Mark Hebert.
—Benjamin Wood, 28, of the 100 block of Beau Lane in Bayou Vista, was arrested at 5:22 p.m. Wednesday for hit and run driving, careless operation of a motor vehicle and no driver’s license, and a warrant for failure to appear on the charge of hit and run driving.
A deputy was dispatched to a report of a crash at the intersection of La. 182 and Universe Road in Bayou Vista. Upon arrival, the deputy observed a vehicle on La. 182 matching the description of a suspect vehicle from a previous hit and run complaint received just prior to the second complaint of a crash, Hebert said in a news release.
The hit and run driving charge was for the crash on U.S. 90 near Universe Road while the careless operation of a motor vehicle charge was for the crash that occurred on La. 182 and Universe Road, Sheriff’s Office Spokeswoman Traci Landry said. At 5:05 p.m., the sheriff’s office got the call about the hit and run on U.S. 90, Landry said. At 5:11 p.m., the sheriff’s office got the call regarding the crash on La. 182, Landry said.
The deputy made contact with the driver, identified as Wood, and learned that he had an active warrant for his arrest. During the investigation, the deputy identified Wood as the driver in the hit and run incident that took place on U.S. 90 near Universe Road. Wood was jailed with bail set at $6,750.
Hebert reported responding to 45 complaints in the parish and reported the following arrests in east St. Mary Parish:
—Nelson Gonzalez, 40, of the 100 block of Bergeron Lane in Morgan City, was arrested at 1:20 p.m. Wednesday for simple battery. A deputy responded to a disturbance at a business on Degravelle Road in Amelia. During the investigation, the deputy learned that Gonzalez struck a man, Hebert said. Gonzales was jailed and released on $500 bail.
—Gordon Jones, 32, of the 200 block of La. 400 in Napoleonville, was arrested at 3:15 a.m. today for possession Schedule I marijuana.
—Brandon Williams, 30, of the 700 block of Duval Street in Amelia, was arrested at 3:17 a.m. today for possession of Schedule I marijuana.
A deputy patrolling the Amelia area observed two men in a vehicle parked on Friendship Alley playing loud music. As the deputy approached, one of the men tossed an item to the ground, Hebert said. The deputy made contact with the men, identified as Jones and Williams and located the item, which was determined to be piece of marijuana, Hebert said. The deputy received consent to search the vehicle and located a small plastic bag containing marijuana. Jones and Williams were released on summons to appear in court Jan. 26.
—Mark M. Goulas, 36, of the 100 block of Ash Lane in Thibodaux, was arrested at 4:05 a.m. today for possession of drug paraphernalia and on a warrant from Thibodaux police for failure to appear on the charges of general speed law, expired driver’s license and no insurance.
A deputy patrolling the Amelia area observed a person sleeping in a vehicle parked in the parking lot of a business on Lake Palourde Road, Hebert said. The deputy made contact with the person and identified him as Goulas, who held an active warrant for arrest. The deputy received consent to search the vehicle and located a glass pipe containing residue consistent with illegal drug use. Goulas was jailed with bail set at $1,500.
Morgan City Police Chief Michael Banks reported the following arrests:
—Javian J. Francis, 17, of Oregon Street in Berwick, was arrested at 9:08 a.m. Wednesday for illegal use of contraband in presence of people under age 17, possession of Schedule I marijuana and contributing to the delinquency of a juvenile.
—Ciara M. Leonard, 27, of La. 182 in Morgan City, was arrested at 9:08 a.m. Wednesday for illegal use of contraband in the presence of people under age 17, possession of Schedule I marijuana third offense, possession of drug paraphernalia and contributing to the delinquency of a juvenile.
Officers were dispatched to a La. 182 apartment complex in regard to suspected drug activity in the presence of a juvenile. Officers located the apartment in question and made contact with the occupants, Leonard and Francis, who were found inside a bathroom of the apartment with a 15-year-old boy, Banks said.
Officers located suspected marijuana inside the bathroom of the apartment along with items of paraphernalia. Officers received statements from the suspects admitting to the illegal use of the substance in the presence of the juvenile, Banks said. Both were jailed.
—Thomas D. Barefoot, 48, of Second Street in Morgan City, was arrested at 8 a.m. Wednesday on a warrant for possession of drug paraphernalia.
Barefoot was located by officers at a Second Street address and placed under arrest on an outstanding warrant for the Morgan City Police Department. He was jailed.
—Michelle Brown, 42, of Fifth Street in Morgan City, was arrested at 8:16 a.m. Wednesday for disturbing the peace and on a warrant for failure to appear for misuse of the 911 emergency system.
Officers dispatched to the area of Fifth and Everett streets regarding a woman causing a disturbance located Brown, who according to the complainant entered onto another’s property and began to cause a disturbance. Brown was jailed.
—Kimberly Harris, 42, of Levee Road in Morgan City, was arrested at 5:15 p.m. Wednesday on a warrant for probation violation. Harris was located in the City Court of Morgan City and was jailed.
—Cody Rink, 18, of Jennie Drive in Morgan City, was arrested at 7:01 p.m. Wednesday for possession of synthetic marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Officers were dispatched to a La. 182 apartment complex in regards to suspicious activity. Officers located several people in the area, and upon identifying the suspect, located Rink who was wanted on an outstanding warrant for the Morgan City Police Department. Rink was also found to possess suspected synthetic marijuana and was jailed.
Patterson Police Chief Patrick LaSalle reported the following arrest:
—John Sons Jr., 26, of the 1800 block of N Street in Patterson, was arrested at 6:35 p.m. Wednesday for DUI first offense, reckless operation and criminal damage to property. Sons was jailed with no bail set yet.
Berwick Police Chief James Richard reported no arrests.
