Two Morgan City teens were charged Wednesday in connection with an Aug. 23 incident in which they are accused of fleeing from officers and leaving behind a stolen semi-automatic handgun, Morgan City Police Chief Michael Banks said in a news release.

A male juvenile, 16, of Morgan City, was arrested at 1:59 p.m. Wednesday on a warrant for possession of a firearm with obliterated serial number, theft of a firearm and possession of a firearm by a juvenile.
The warrants stem from an incident that occurred Aug. 23, Banks said. In that incident, a patrolling officer attempted to detain two males in the area of Brashear Avenue and Fourth Street after the officer observed suspicious activity, Banks said. The two males fled from the officer, Banks said.
In the chase that followed, the officer was able to recover a bicycle along with a .45-caliber, semi-automatic handgun, which one of the males had discarded, Banks said. The weapon was found to have obliterated serial numbers that had been filed off in order to conceal any identifying marks, the chief said.

The 15-year-old boy was eventually located and admitted to officers his involvement in the incident. A 16-year-old boy was identified as the other suspect. Officers learned that the 16-year-old juvenile had stolen the weapon from a Morgan City address and attempted to file the serial numbers from the weapon, Banks said.
