Berwick man faces assault, battery charges after bar fight

A 24-year-old Berwick man, who struck another man in the head at a bar and made threats against the victim’s life, was charged Thursday with battery and assault, St. Mary Parish Sheriff Mark Hebert said in a news release.
—Daniel Ratcliff, 24, of the 21700 block of Sixth Street in Berwick, was arrested at 8:51 p.m. Thursday on the charges of simple battery, simple assault, simple criminal damage to property, disturbing the peace intoxicated and resisting an officer.
Deputies responded to a report of a fight in progress at a bar/lounge on La. 182 in Amelia. Upon arrival, deputies observed a man who approached them in a combative manner. He was detained and identified as Ratcliff. Deputies learned that Ratcliff entered the establishment and began causing a disturbance by yelling, Hebert said.
Ratcliff then struck a man in the head and made verbal threats against his life, Hebert said. The male victim sustained lacerations to his face, Hebert said. A bar stool was damaged in the incident. During his arrest, Ratcliff forcefully attempted to pull away from deputies. Ratcliff was jailed and released on $2,750 bail.
Hebert reported responding to 37 complaints in the parish and reported the following arrests in east St. Mary Parish:
—Julio Sagastizado-Castro, 35, of the 100 block of Village Lane in Amelia, at 2:58 a.m. today on the charges of impeding the flow of traffic, resisting an officer by force and flight from an officer. A deputy assigned to patrol the Amelia area observed a vehicle stopped in the middle of Village Lane.
When the deputy initiated a traffic stop, the driver of the vehicle accelerated away from the deputy, Hebert said. The deputy followed the vehicle to a residence on Village Lane and made contact with the driver, identified as Sagastizado-Castro. During his arrest Sagastizado-Castro attempted to pull away from the deputy, Hebert said. Sagastizado-Castro was jailed with no bail set.
—Brigg J. McDaniel, 37, of the 10100 block of La. 13 in Kaplan, at 9:32 a.m. Thursday on the charge of possession of open alcoholic containers in motor vehicles and on a warrant for failure to appear on the charge of direct contempt, speeding, and failure to honor written promise to appear.
A deputy travelling on U.S. 90 in the Morgan City area observed a vehicle moving at a high rate of speed and driving in a reckless manner. The deputy conducted a traffic stop at the foot of the U.S. 90 bridge in Berwick and made contact with the driver of the vehicle who was identified as McDaniel.
The deputy discovered that McDaniel was driving with a suspended license and that he held an active warrant for his arrest. The deputy cited McDaniel for carless operation of a motor vehicle, driving with a suspended license, and no proof of insurance in vehicle.
The deputy also located a freshly opened can of beer inside the vehicle McDaniel was driving, Hebert said. McDaniel was jailed and released on $500 bail.
—Robert D. Ledoux, 63, of the 400 block of Boulder Creek Road in Lafayette, at 5:12 p.m. Thursday on the charge of reckless operation of a vehicle.
—Warren K. Shoop, 38, of the 100 block of Trahan Street in Abbeville, at 5:12 p.m. Thursday on the charge of reckless operation of a vehicle and hit and run driving.
A deputy responded to a complaint of a hit and run crash that occurred on U.S. 90 in the Patterson area. The deputy located the two vehicles involved in the incident traveling on U.S. 90 in the Franklin area and conducted a stop.
The deputy made contact with the driver of a pick-up truck, identified as Ledoux, and the driver of a tractor-trailer, identified as Shoop. The deputy determined that Shoop’s vehicle struck Ledoux’s vehicle as Ledoux was changing lanes, the sheriff said. Shoop failed to stop following the crash, continuing to drive down U.S. 90 following in close proximity to Ledoux’s vehicle, Hebert said.
Both drivers then engaged in a series of actions believed by the deputy to be a case of road rage. Ledoux quickly decelerated in front of Shoop. Shoop changed lanes passing dangerously close to Ledoux and then changed back into the lane in front of Ledoux’s vehicle. Following the investigation, the deputy released both drivers on summons to appear in court July 22.
Morgan City Assistant Police Chief Mark Griffin Jr. reported the following arrests:
—Conley T. Jones, 65, of Joseph Street in Morgan City, at 8:54 a.m. Thursday on the charges of driving under suspension and unauthorized use of a moveable.
Patrol officers investigated a complaint of a vehicle taken from a residence without the owner’s permission. According to reports, the officers were given a description of the vehicle along with a possible suspect. Officers were able to locate the truck and identified the driver as Jones.
The investigation revealed that Jones had removed the keys from the victim’s apartment and took the truck, Griffin said. Jones was jailed where he remains.
—Keyana Davis, 18, of Cardinal Street in Morgan City, at 3:29 p.m. Thursday on a warrant charging her with contempt of court.
Officers located Davis at her residence. Davis was placed under arrest for warrants from the Sixth Ward City Court of Morgan City. Davis was jailed and released on bail.
—Kedesha Scott, 20, of Seventh Street in Franklin, at 12:55 a.m. today on a warrant charging her with failure to appear for theft of goods less than $500, on a warrant charging her with failure to appear for simple criminal damage to property, possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of Schedule I marijuana.
Investigators came into contact with Scott near Idaho Street. Officers learned that Scott had outstanding warrants. Scott was placed under arrest, and during a search of her purse, officers located suspected marijuana and items believed to be drug paraphernalia, Griffin said. Scott was jailed.
Patterson Police Chief Patrick LaSalle reported the following arrests:
—Monica Charles, 36, of the 1400 block of Live Oak Street in Patterson, at 7:22 p.m. Thursday on the charge of theft of goods. Charles was released on her own recognizance.
Berwick Police Chief James Richard reported no arrests.
