Dog shot, child taken hostage by father

A Bayou L’Ourse father shot his dog, fired a shot at his friend and took his 5-year-old daughter hostage at gunpoint Friday.
Assumption Parish Sheriff Mike Waguespack said his department received a call reporting that Danny Ray Reding, 49, of the 100 block of Elaine Street in Bayou L’Ourse, had a gun and locked himself in the bedroom with his daughter.
An investigation revealed that Reding was on medication and had been up all night drinking with a friend, Waguespack said in a news release.
An estimated four shots were fired. Reding shot his dog — a bulldog/pitbull mix — and, at one point, pointed the gun at his friend and fired one shot, the sheriff said.
Reding then locked he and his daughter inside a bedroom, according to the news release.
Meanwhile, deputies set up a perimeter. Upon hearing another shot, they made entry. They subdued Reding near the back door of the residence as he tried to flee. He sustained a laceration on his hand from a knife he was holding at the time, Waguespack said.
Reding’s daughter was rescued unharmed. The dog survived the gunshot and is undergoing treatment by a veterinarian. It is expected to survive. Deputies located the .22-caliber revolver Reding was described as firing, the sheriff said..
Reding was booked into the Assumption Parish Detention Center for several felonies including:
—Attempted second degree murder.
—Aggravated assault with a firearm.
—Cruelty to juveniles.
—Cruelty to animals.
—Carrying of a firearm by a convicted felon.
—Illegal use of weapons or dangerous instrument.
—Resisting an officer.
Reding is being held in Assumption Parish with no bail set.
