Four inmates at the parish jail were charged with battery Thursday after being accused of striking another inmate Tuesday fracturing bones in his face, St. Mary Parish Sheriff Mark Hebert said in a news release.
—Rodrick Hunter, 23, of Patterson, Deavnta Burden, 22, of Franklin, Marvin Gabriel, 23, of Baldwin, and Quincy Toups, 34, of Patterson, inmates at the St. Mary Parish Law Enforcement Center, were charged with second degree battery at 2:08 p.m. Thursday. On Tuesday, a jailer responded to a disturbance in a dorm and observed an inmate with injuries to his face, Hebert said.
The inmate was removed from the dorm, given medical attention, and subsequently transported to a local hospital for additional treatment. The jailer identified the above listed inmates as suspects who struck the victim in the head causing two fractures to his face, the sheriff said. The charged offenders remain in jail.
Hebert reported responding to 54 complaints and reported the following arrests relating to east St. Mary Parish:
—John H. Finister, 21, of the 10500 block of La. 182, Franklin, was arrested at 11:19 p.m. Thursday for taillights required, license plate lights required, resisting an officer by force, possession of Schedule II Adderall with intent to distribute and possession of Schedule IV Xanax and Ultram with intent to distribute.
A deputy assigned to patrol the Amelia area observed a vehicle with no illuminated taillights or an illuminated license plate, Hebert said. The deputy conducted a traffic stop on La. 182 and made contact with the driver of the vehicle, identified as Finister. During the traffic stop investigation, Finister repeatedly attempted to re-enter his vehicle, Hebert said.
The deputy received consent to search Finister and the vehicle and located pharmaceutical pill bottles containing multiple Xanax and Ultram pills along with more than two dozen Adderall pills for which Finister did not have a prescription. During the arrest, Finister attempted to forcefully pull away from the deputy. The deputy transported Finister to the parish jail for booking. No bail is set.
—Tyler M. Porche, 28, of the 400 block of Clark Road in Bayou Vista, was arrested at 7:36 a.m. Thursday for driving under suspension, established school zone violation, and no proof of insurance. A deputy assigned to police the Bayou Vista Elementary school zone observed a vehicle travelling 30 mph in a posted 15 mph school zone on Southeast Boulevard, Hebert said.
The deputy conducted a traffic stop and made contact with the driver, identified as Porche. While speaking with Porche, the deputy learned that the driver’s license was suspended and that he had no valid proof of current insurance. The deputy released Porche on a summons to appear in court April 7.
—Dustin Pike, 18, of the 300 block of Ratcliff Lane in Ricohoc, was arrested at 1:21 p.m. Thursday for possession of Schedule I and possession of drug paraphernalia. A deputy travelling U.S. 90 in the Ricohoc area observed a person looking over the edge of the Calumet bridge while walking on the shoulder of the roadway, Hebert said. Concerned for the person’s safety, the deputy made contact with the person and identified him as Pike, the sheriff said.
Pike stated to the deputy that he was walking to his residence. Out of concern that Pike could be struck by a vehicle while walking on the highway, the deputy offered to transport Pike, Hebert said. Before entering the police unit, the deputy conducted a search of Pike and located a glass pipe and a small baggie containing marijuana, the sheriff said. The deputy also discovered that Pike was on probation. Pike was jailed with no bail set.
