La. 70 by Lake End Park traffic closed for 13 hours due to diesel spill
La. 70 at Lake End Park was shut down for more than 13 hours, and police diverted traffic through the park due to a diesel truck leaking fuel after the truck overturned Thursday morning, police spokesman Capt. James Blair said.
Police received a call at 7:26 a.m. Thursday of an 18-wheeler tractor-trailer overturned near Lake End Park on La. 70, Blair said. The driver was extricated from the vehicle and sustained minor injuries, Blair said.
Edward Larkin Jr., 60, of Metairie, was driving a 2000 Peterbilt tractor-trailer for Gorman Transportation in Chalmette, Police Lt. Chad Adams said.
The 18-wheeler was headed south on La. 70 by Lake End Park and failed to negotiate the roadway, Adams said.
The tractor-trailer was carrying 8,000 gallons of diesel fuel and was leaking, Blair said. Emergency personnel, including State Police, hazmat and cleanup crews, were called to the scene, Blair said.
La. 70 by Lake End Park was reopened shortly after 9 p.m. Thursday, Blair said.
On Thursday, the cleanup crew spread some absorbent material where the tractor-trailer ended up on the side of the roadway, Blair said.
A cleanup crew had to go back to the site today to continue cleanup to remove the top layer of dirt where the tractor-trailer came to rest, Blair said.
Traffic flow through Lake End Park was mostly smooth, and 18-wheelers were the only vehicles not allowed to go through the park, Blair said. A minor incident occurred Thursday when another 18-wheeler struck a fence by the park, Blair said.
