Police: Man intended to sell marijuana

A 28-year-old Morgan City man was charged Thursday with intent to distribute marijuana after police received a report of the man walking in traffic, Morgan City Police Chief James Blair said in a news release.
—Jereith J. Callery, 28, of Keith Street in Morgan City, was arrested at 4:11 p.m. Thursday on the charges of possession of Schedule I marijuana with the intent to distribute, resisting an officer, transactions involving proceed from controlled dangerous substance activity, violation of uniformed controlled dangerous substance law, on a warrant for failure to pay a fine on the charge of simple assault, on a 16th Judicial District Court for failure to comply with drug court, on a warrant for 16th Judicial District Court for failure to comply with drug court, and on a St. Mary Parish warrant for littering and no driver license.
Officers were dispatched to the area of Redwood and Bernice streets regarding a man walking in traffic. Officers arrived at the location and encountered Callery. Officers observed Callery reaching into his waistband and acting in a suspicious manner, Blair said.
Upon attempting to speak with Callery, he fled from officers. He was observed discarding several small cellophane bags as he fled. Callery was captured by officers and detained. The items were recovered and discovered to be suspected marijuana divided into 32 small individual packets indicative of street sales of narcotics, Blair said.
Callery was also found to be in possession of proceeds believed to be derived from the sales of narcotics, which was seized. The incident was within a prescribed drug free zone resulting in an additional charge of violation of uniformed controlled substance law. Callery was jailed and remains incarcerated.
Blair reported the following arrests:
—Mary P. Pool, 30, of Sixth Street in Morgan City, at 1:01 p.m. Thursday on a warrant charging her with theft under $350.
Pool was located at a Sixth Street home and placed under arrest on an outstanding warrant for the Morgan City Police Department. The warrant was based on an investigation into an employee stealing $60 from a restaurant, Blair said. Pool was booked and released after posting bail.
—Devin C. Smith, 17, of Mitchell Drive in Houma, at 3:49 p.m. Thursday on the charges of possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of Schedule I marijuana.
Smith was located in the City Court of Morgan City and placed under arrest based on an incident and traffic stop that occurred May 31. In that investigation, Smith was found to be in possession of suspected marijuana and items of drug paraphernalia during a traffic stop, Blair said. Smith was booked and released after posting cash bail.
—Deven Vining, 22, of Alabama Street in Morgan City, at 8:52 p.m. Thursday on the charge of possession of Schedule II methamphetamine.
—Phil K. Lodrigue Jr., 35, of Morgan City, at 8:52 p.m. Thursday on the charges of possession of Schedule II methamphetamine and improper lighting.
A patrol officer observed a vehicle being operated with improper lighting and stopped the vehicle to investigate. The driver, identified as Lodrigue could not produce a valid driver’s license and appeared extremely nervous, Blair said.
During the investigation, officers identified a passenger, Vining. Officers also located a crystalline substance in a cellophane bag suspected to be methamphetamine. Both suspects were jailed with no bail set.
—Norman Carter, 51, of La. 182 in Morgan City, at 10:14 p.m. Thursday on a warrant charging him with disturbing the peace intoxicated.
Carter was located on South Railroad Avenue near Aycock Street and arrested on an outstanding warrant. He was jailed.
Patterson Police Chief Patrick LaSalle reported the following arrest:
—Bianca Prince, 24, of the 400 block of Ninth Street in Franklin, at 5:31 p.m. Thursday on the charge of identity theft. Prince was released on $1,500 bail.
St. Mary Parish Sheriff Mark Hebert reported responding to 40 complaints in the parish and reported no arrests in east St. Mary Parish.
Berwick Police Chief James Richard reported no arrests.
