Police: Morgan City woman arrested on identity theft, arson charges; allegedly started fire to intimidate victims
A 33-year-old Morgan City woman was booked into jail Tuesday on identity theft, arson and intimidating witness charges after she allegedly started a mobile home fire Monday to scare victims whose identities she had stolen to make fraudulent purchases on credit cards, police said.
Mia Nguyen Amador, 33, of Cottonwood Street in Morgan City, was arrested at 11:08 a.m. Tuesday on the charges of two counts of identity theft, aggravated arson and two counts of intimidating witnesses.
On Nov. 20, Morgan City police detectives began an investigation into a possible identity theft. The victim reported that someone had fraudulently obtained credit cards and made purchases using the victim's info, police said.
On Monday, detectives responded to a fire in the 300 block of Grizzaffi Street after authorities discovered evidence that the fire was a suspected arson, police said. Detectives identified Amador as a possible suspect and gathered evidence that she had gotten the credit cards using the identities of two victims, police said. Amador stated that she placed combustible materials at a mobile home, which started a fire in an effort to intimidate and scare the identity theft victims, police said.
Amador was jailed and is awaiting bail to be set. The investigation into the case is ongoing.
