Sheriff: Amelia man improperly restrained dogs

A 35-year-old Amelia man was booked Wednesday on a warrant in connection with incident in which St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office deputies found three improperly restrained dogs after responding to reports of a fight and shooting in Amelia, Sheriff Mark Hebert said in a news release.
—Derek Gaskins, 35, of the 100 block of Friendship Alley in Amelia, was arrested at 1:33 p.m. Wednesday on a warrant charging him with three counts of unlawful restraint of a dog.
On Feb. 1, deputies responded to a complaint about several men fighting on Friendship Alley in Amelia. As deputies arrived at the location, the Sheriff’s Office received a second call reporting a shooting on Friendship Alley.
Detectives also responded and processed evidence of a gun being fired. No injuries were reported. The investigation into the illegal discharge of a firearm is still ongoing, Sheriff’s Office Spokeswoman Traci Landry said this morning.
While on Friendship Alley Feb. 1, a deputy located several improperly kenneled pit bull breed and pit bull mixed breed dogs behind a home. A total of nine dogs were turned over to the St. Mary Parish Animal Control Officer, Hebert said.
The St. Mary Parish Humane Society Officer was contacted and assisted the deputy in the investigation which concluded that three of the animals were improperly restrained by large chains, Hebert said.
On Wednesday, a deputy patrolling Amelia located Gaskins on the warrant at his home. Gaskins was booked into parish jail and released after posting $6,000 bail.
Hebert reported responding to 44 complaints in the parish and reported the following arrests relating to east St. Mary Parish:
—Cathy Crochet, 35, of the 2600 block of Fourth Street in Berwick, was arrested at 10:24 a.m. Wednesday on a warrant on the charge of simple battery. Crochet turned herself in at the St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office in Franklin. The warrant was issued after a deputy received a complaint of a battery and collected statements indicating that Crochet pushed and struck a female victim at a residence in Bayou Vista, Hebert said. Crochet was booked into parish jail and released on $500 bail.
—Destiny R. Guillory, 25, of the 100 block of Rue Des Amis in Lafayette, was arrested at 2:50 p.m. Wednesday on the charge of possession of Schedule I drugs. A deputy responded to a report of a reckless driver on U.S. 90 in the Patterson area.
The deputy located the suspect vehicle and conducted a traffic stop near Lassus Street. The deputy made contact with the driver, identified as Guillory. As the deputy spoke with Guillory, she reached inside her purse and handed the deputy a plastic bag containing suspected synthetic cannabinoids.
The deputy also located a piece of burned cigar wrapping containing the suspected synthetic substance. Guillory was booked into parish jail and released on $2,000 bail.
—Jarvis Granger, 29, of the 1000 block of Joseph Street in Amelia, was arrested at 11:22 p.m. Wednesday on the charges of possession of synthetic cannabinoids fourth offense, misuse of toxic vapors, and on a warrant for failure to appear on the charge of disturbing the peace by using offensive words.
—Brennan Skinner, 23, of the 1000 block of Grace Street in Amelia, was arrested at 11:22 p.m. Wednesday on warrants for failure to appear on the charge of disturbing the peace fighting, failure to appear on the charge of speeding and failure to honor written promise to appear and for simple battery.
Deputies patrolling Amelia observed Granger, who had an active warrant for his arrest, outside of his home. As the deputy approached Granger, he observed Skinner inside a parked vehicle. The deputy knew Skinner was wanted on active warrants as well, Hebert said.
While speaking with Skinner, the deputy smelled the odor of burning marijuana. During the arrests, the deputy located a burnt cigarette suspected to contain synthetic cannabinoids where Granger was detained, Hebert said.
Further investigation revealed that the illegal substance belonged to Granger. Both Granger and Skinner were jailed with no bail set.
The warrant for simple battery for Skinner was issued following an investigation into a report of a battery that occurred in Amelia in February. The deputy gathered statements and other evidence that Skinner struck a female victim during an argument, the sheriff said.
—Annabel Garza, 22, of the 500 block of Egle Street in Morgan City, was arrested at 2:32 a.m. today on the charge of disturbing the peace fighting.
—Mikal Boutte, 20, of the 2200 block of Neco Town Road in New Iberia, was arrested at 2:32 a.m. today on the charge of disturbing the peace fighting.
A deputy assigned to patrol Amelia observed a large number of vehicles in the parking lot of a club on La. 182 after closing time. The deputy entered the lounge and observed a woman with blood coming from her nose. Upon further investigation, the deputy learned that the subject, identified as Boutte, engaged in a fist fight with another female during an argument.
The second subject was identified as Garza who sustained a swollen lip during the fight. Both Garza and Boutte were booked into parish jail and then released on summonses to appear in court May 27.
Morgan City Police Chief James Blair reported the following arrests:
—Carl Allen, 24, of Park Street in Patterson, was arrested at 1:11 p.m. Wednesday on the charges of domestic abuse battery, criminal damage to property and possession of marijuana second offense.
—Mayette Grogan, 19, of Wren Street in Morgan City, was arrested at 1:13 p.m. Wednesday on the charges of domestic abuse battery and criminal damage to property.
Officers responded to a home on Wren Street in regard to a call of a person damaging property. When the officers arrived, Allen and Grogan were located at the home and each showed signs of a battery. Officers were told that Allen and Grogan were involved in an argument when they both damaged each other’s property, Blair said.
The two allegedly engaged in a physical altercation and allegedly committed a battery on one another. Both Allen and Grogan were placed under arrest and searched, when officers located suspected marijuana on Allen, Blair said. They were jailed.
—Ronda K. Baines, 48, of La. 182 in Morgan City, was arrested at 7:55 p.m. Wednesday on the charge of domestic abuse battery.
Officers responded to a home on La. 182 in regard to a report of a disturbance. Officers located Baines along with a juvenile who showed signs of a battery and another witness to the incident.
Officers were told that Baines and the juvenile were involved in a disturbance, and Baines allegedly committed a battery on the juvenile. Baines was jailed.
—Ricky D. Pillaro, 60, of First Street in Morgan City, was arrested at 10:36 p.m. Wednesday on the charges of possession of methamphetamine, possession of drug paraphernalia, violation of uniform controlled dangerous substance laws and obstruction of justice.
Narcotics division detectives executed a search warrant at a home on First Street. While conducting a search of the residence, detectives located suspected methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia, Blair said. When detectives arrived, Pillaro attempted to destroy evidence investigators were attempting to locate, Blair said.
The location of the incident was within the area of an elementary school in violation of uniform controlled dangerous substance laws. Pillaro was jailed.
Berwick Police Chief James Richard reported the following arrest:
—Brennan Foreman, 23, of the 1000 block of Susan Court in Morgan City, was arrested at 10:57 a.m. Wednesday on the charges of speeding 37 mph in a 20 mph zone and driving with a suspended driver’s license. Bail is set at $1,500.
Patterson Police Chief Patrick LaSalle reported no arrests.
