Sheriff: Carencro man was driving wrong way on U.S. 90 in Amelia

Staff Report

A 26-year-old Carencro man was apprehended this morning after state police reported a vehicle traveling westbound in the eastbound lanes of U.S. 90 near Amelia, and, during the pursuit of the vehicle, a responding sheriff’s deputy was involved in a crash with an 18-wheeler, St. Mary Parish Sheriff Mark Hebert said in a news release.
—Joseph Jacobs, 26, of the 100 block of Nanoke Lane in Carencro, was arrested at 5:08 a.m. today for driving while intoxicated and aggravated flight from an officer.
Just after 4 a.m. today, the St. Mary Sheriff’s Office received a call originating from Louisiana State Police Troop C regarding a vehicle travelling westbound in the eastbound lanes of U.S. 90. Deputies received information that the vehicle was approaching the St. Mary Parish line driving towards Amelia, the sheriff said.
A deputy stationed in the eastbound lane at the Amelia exit activated the police unit’s lights and sirens to initiate a traffic stop. The suspect vehicle failed to stop and continued to travel westbound in the eastbound lanes. The deputy followed the vehicle through Morgan City and into Berwick. Additional units from the St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office, Morgan City Police Department, and Berwick Police Department responded, Hebert said.
With the assistance of those agencies, the vehicle was stopped near the Berwick/Bayou Vista line, the sheriff said. The driver, identified as Jacobs, was taken into custody. Jacobs registered .175 grams-percent blood alcohol content on the breath test. The deputy transported Jacobs to the parish jail for booking. No bail is set.
While responding to the call of the vehicle travelling westbound in the eastbound lanes of U.S. 90, a deputy, stationed in the eastbound lane near the Martin Luther King exit in Morgan City, was involved in a crash with an 18-wheeler truck, Hebert said.
The deputy was transported to Thibodaux Regional Medical Center, treated, and released in stable condition, the sheriff said. The driver of the truck reported no injuries, Hebert said. The investigation of the deputy involved in the crash has been turned over to Louisiana State Police. Any additional information will be released through that agency, Hebert said.
